A BCHOO..MAS TE 1 b FLEAbLUE.
Mr. Editor —Were you never a
schoolmaster. It is one of the most
bothersome, pleasing, aggravating,
teasingemployments thatman ever un
dertook. ‘What letter is that,’said I,
half out of humor with a young chuc
klehead, who had hammered three
months at the alphabet without know
ing the first letter. ‘Why—why—its
B. ‘Master,’ cries one, ‘Sam pinches
me!’ Silence! what letter is it?’ ‘Why
why, it‘s ll.’ ‘Master, call Tom; he
crowds.’ The d—i* surely in the chil
dren, thought I. ‘Thomas, come
here you young rascal! what have you
been at?’ -Why, sir, the rest aerouged
me, and I could‘ut help it. ‘I “h e
your seat, sir, and mind better for the
future, well what letter did you call
it ?> *>Vhy, I said it two times a redy
a- you did thought I. ‘lt‘s not
rightly named.’ ‘Well pray master,
what is it then?’ Why it‘s A, booby.
•Ha, he,— a booby! why master, you
never called it that way afore. Well
A. then. ‘He, he a-tben. ‘You num-
scul, A, then, (‘loud) ‘A! [loud *.]
There, take your seat, sir, you are
among the incurables.
Reading Class. Chapter the thirty
cn th. ‘Halt Sir: who ever heard of
he thirty tenth chapter?’ Why mas
j er, the other was the thirty nitli.
‘Very well, then call, it fortieth.
Chapter forty eight. ‘Stop, I said
fortieth. ‘Yes sir, fortieth. ‘Muster,
pi ease to let me fetch water? *ls this
ray lesson? where did you leave off
| last week? ‘ls house a verb or an
adjective? ‘Master, what does p-t-t t
his-i i-ir spell?‘Plithisirk. T-t-t sick.
‘Master, what day of tho month does
the 4th of July come on next year.
Can‘t tell, I have seen no new alma
nacs. Who is making that noise?
Why Billy Banter says the master
don't know much, or else he could tell
what day of the month, the fourth of
July comes on.
PLEASURE.
Society is not, and ought not to be,
exclusively devoted to serious con
cerns. The beneficent Creator of tho
Universe would not have adopted hu
man beings to the enjoyment of his
gifts, unless he intended that they
should be enjoyed. With tho law
which enjoins industry comes the law
of fruition. Why should the eye be
formed to perceive natural and artifi
cial beautie, if it is not to bo used for
that purpose? Why has the capacity to
make instruments capable of einiling
sweet sounds been given; if such
sounds are not to be heard?— Wb>
should th human atrnrt urn hi*
of the sweetest melody and of graceful
action, and of the delightful expres
sion, beaming from innocent and heav
enly countenance, if pleasure for such
sources were forbidden us? Why does
the grape ripen, the silk worm toil, the
annual fleece return the diamond spar
kle, the marble yield io the cliissl, and
the canvass catch and preserve the
inspiration of genius, but to awaken
human desire, animate industry, ami
reward wiih fruition? It is the excess
and the abuse that is forbidden.
JOURNEYMAN PRINTERS
From high to low, in New England
and at the South, they arc the same
class of dissipated, careless well infor
med, good hearted men—knowiughow
to act better than they do; nothing at
times, yet every thing if occasion re
quires it, we linvo seen one and the
same individual of the craft, a Metho
dist minister in Carolina, a boatmau
on the western canal, a Shci'ilfm Ohio
a sailing master on board a privateer,
a tiddler in New Orleans, a dandy in
Broadway, New York, a pressman in
a garrej printing ofti< e, and without a
settled habitation any where! * * *
Having nothing to lose, no calamity
overwhelm them; and caring to gain
nothing, no tide of fortune carries
them upward from the level where
they chose to stand; the least to be en
vied, yet the happiest dogs in Chr s.
tendon. Philosophers by practice,
aud spendthrifts by inclination, they
complain not when the stomach cries
for bread and they have no bread to
give; and in the next hour, if fortune
favors them with the means, expend
more for unnecessary delicacies than
would serve to keep them on whole*
some food for a whole week.
In most quarrels there is a fault oo
both sides. A quarrel may be com
pared to a spark, which cannot be
produced without a flint, as well as a
steel, either of them may hammer oq
wood forever, no fi*c will follow’.
Our wealth is often a snare to ourselves,
nd always a temptation to others,
