from some cause fell from* the robe.
The father then descended by the

JEWISH FESTIVAL.
The Feast of Succoth, or Taberna
cles, which commenced at sunrise
yesterday morning, was one of the
three great festivals in the year ap
pointed for the appearance of every
male Jew at Jerusalem. - The cere
monies attending the festival are ob
served by the modern Jews; the dwel
ling in booths is observed by all those
who have the convenience of building
0110. It is a temporary building,
covered with, branches of trees, and
thclinterior is handsomely and taste
fully decorated fruits, dowers,
and ornaments, and Hebrew prayers,
are said up>n Lite occasion. In the
centre js suspended a lamp, with
rven lights branching from it. In
this dwelling the owner, with his fam
i.l>, abide fur the eight days of the
festival. It is ordained that they
take of the fruit of the goodly trees,
branches of palm-tree, ami boughs of
thick trees, and willows of the
bj’ k, over which they repeat certain
prayers, thanking the Almighty that
he has preserved them to enjoy the
present festival. The last day of the
feast is a particular day of rejoicing,
&nd i& railed ‘Simchatli Torah,* (tv
joi< ing for the law,) which may be
explained s follows;—The Penta
.teuch is divided info fifty two differ
ent portions, each portion being read
•every sabbath, and on this day they
finish and begin it again, for which
their rejoicings are held. On this day
ail their roll , ot* books of the law, are.
decorated with their silver bells, and
other ornaments appertaining to them,
with which, each roll being carried oft’
b> its owner, tiny encompass their
synagogue seven times. This parti
cular day of rejoicing was formerly
appointed for drawing water out of
the pool of Siloattt. It was not or
darned, but only observed as an an
cient custom, as is the present* ‘ Sim
cliath Torah,’ which was appointed m
lieu of it when they could no longer
observe the former custom. The dc
sign of this festival was to com memo,
rate the dwellings of the Israelites in
tents in the wl.ierncss, previous to
their settlement in the promised land.
