Dean Swill 0. ing in the country, on
a visit to his friend. Dr. Sheridan,
they were iniormed that a heggar*s
wedding was about t > t>e rcltbVited.
Sheridan played well upon the violin;
Swift therefore prop ised that Ik
slioold go to the place where the cere
mony was to be perlormcd, disguised
as a blind fiddler, while he attended
liim as his man. Thus accoutred they
set out, and were received ! y thejovi
a! crew with great acclamation* They
had plenty of good cheer, and never
was a mure joyous wedding s on. All
was mirth and frolic; the beggars told
stones, played triiks, cracked jokes,
song and danced, in a manner which
afforded high amusement to the fiddler
and his man, who were well rewarded
when they departed, which was not
till late in the evening. The next day
the Dean and Sheridan walked out in
their usual dress, and found many <>{
their late companions, hopping about
upon crutches, or pit tending to be
blind, pouring forth melancholy com
plaints and supplications fop cherry.
Sheridan distributed am r ; them the
inom-y he ha 1 ret evt and —hot the Dean,
who hated ail mendicants, fV!I into a
violent passion, telling them of the
adventure of the preceding day, and
threatening to send every one of the n
to prison. This had sm h an effect,
that the blind opened their eyes, and
the lame threw away their crutches,!
running away as f.st as their legs
could carry them.
