Power from the Waves.
A wave motor plant, which is said
to Im working successfully, has been
established at Potoncla, Cal., eighteen
miles from Los Angeles, hy the Wright
Wave Motor Company, of Los Angeles.
A wharf iiti feet wide has been built
out to a distance of 350 feet, at which
point the swell usually begins to break,
anil three motor floats are placed at
the outer end. The up and down mo
tion of each of the floats is communi
cated to the piston of a long hydraulic
cylinder which pumps water into a
tank at high pressure. This water then
drives a Pelton wheel, which drives a
dynamo. During a test of sixteen con
secutive days in December last, when
tho weather varied from calm to
stormy, and the number of waves per
minute varied from three to eight, tho
floats developed 2.3 to 3.5 horsepower
one.h,. measured at the water wheels.
It has been estimated that properly
constructed floats would develop five
horse power each, and that an installa
tion of 1,000 horse power, including an
electric transmission line to Los
Angeles would cost $175 per horse pow
er. The probable annual cost of re
pairs and of Insurance against de
struction of the plant by storms Is not
stated.—Engineering News.

Most people who have read Jules
Verne’s “Around the World in Eighty
Days” will remember how narrowly
the traveller missed his bet, having for
gotten that, in following the sun from
east to west, he had gained one day.
When one crosses the Atlantic from
London to New York, he gains rather
more than half an hour each day. From
New York to Chicago another hour is
gained, another tc Denver, another to
San Francisco, which is reckoning
time eight hours later than London,
and of course tho best part of a day
later than Shanghai and Yokohama.
In crossing the Pacific there comes a
time when the day begins; where yes
terday and tomorrow shake hands, and
where the traveler is cheated out of a
day of his life.
In mld-Paciflc, going west, one skips
from Sunday to Tuesday. Going east
he has one day of the week repeated
two Sundays or Tuesdays, as the case
may be.
The line of the changing day is not
a straight one. The islands of the Pa
cific take their time from the conti
nent with which they trade and from
which they were discovered, ’i bus the
line of the chango zigzags down the
Pacific from South to North, dodging
between the islands.
Hence it might easily happen that a
ship which has already skipped a day
would reach an island which clings to
San Francisco time. In such a case it
would be Monday on shore and Tues
day on the ship.
If the ship’s jolly boat were lying at
a wharf it would be Monday on the
wharf and Tuesday on the boat.
And if a person lives somewhere
near the line he can get a sailboat and
visit yesterday and tomorrow in the
most delightful fashion.
Making Wood Kims for Bicycles.
The average annual output of wood
novelties in Maine has a value well
over $1;000,000. One of the most in
teresting brauches of the industry is
tho X anufacture of wood rims for bi
cycl The factory where the manu
facture is carried on has a floor space
of 78.S00 feet; its daily output averages
about 1,800 rims, and the value of Us
yearly product if about 8120,000. The
wood used is rock maple, and each rim
is composed of three pieces glued and
pressed together with such force aud
exactitude that the rim appears like
one piece, and only the most searching
examination can detec the joints.
After these pieces have been steamed,
bent and glued, they are submitted to
an enormous pressure in a steam power
machine They are then taken to the
lathes, one of which turns the con
cave surface of the outside, and another
the convex surface of the inside of the
rim. After passing on to the sandpa
per machine for smoothing, they are
stained and varnished and bored for
the spokes, and are ready for shipment,
The wood must he perfect, and not the
least defect or discoloration is allowed
to pass. Much of the machinery has
been designed expressly for tins plant,
and the machines, as well as all the
steps In the construction of the rims,
require the supervision of skilled
chauics.—St. Louis Globe-Democrat.

Mutilating the Teeth.
It is curious to what extent the mu
tilation of teeth goes on among sav
age nations, and even among certain
civilized people, such as the Japanese.
With them a girl is never married ex
cept first staining her teeth black with
a repulsive kind of varnish, and the
custom is especially adhered to among
members of the richer clasBC3.
On the west coast of Africa a large
proportion of the teeth are deliberate
ly broken when children reach a cer
tain age. Both in tho New World and
in the Old says Tid Bits, the custom
exists of extracting the two front
teefii of domestic servants. In Peru
tho custom has existed from time im
memorial, and used to be a sign of
slavery in the days of the Incas. This
is also the custom of the Congo and
among the Hottentots, Teeth are
stained in various colors among the
Malays.
A bright red and a bright blue are
not uncommon, and a bright green is
produced with the aid of arsenic and
lemon juice. Livingston related that
among the Kaffirs a child with a prom
inent upper jaw was looked upon as
a monster and immediately killed. On
the Upper Nile the Africans have all
their best teeth extracted in order to
destroy their value in the slave mar
ket and to make it not worth while
for the slave traders to carry them
