Mahegan Came Clear on First In
dictment.
Ih the case of the State vs Jas G
Mahegan for larceny after’trust, T
Gottlieb prosecutor, Mahegan was
acquitted. This verdict was quite a
shock to the community, it may
not be out of place to state that not
a single man was on the jury who
lived in -Abbeville district or who felt
the hardship brought about by the
wrecking of the Abbeville bank by
this adventurer.
According to the evidence in the
case. Mahegan bought out A E Pot
ter's bank and paid for it with the
depositors money, and when the de
positors checked against their depos
its they were “non esl"—gone. If
tiiis is not stealing, please coin a
word that will describe the act.
Storm in Wilcox.
The storm of last Sunday and Sun
day night did considerable damage
throughout the county to the crops,
etc. The cotton in the fields was
actually ruined, the corn blown
down, the sugar cane laid flat, the
fields made boggy, and the fencing
blown down. The turpentine farms
were badly damaged from blown
down trees, boggy ground and swol
len streams. In many places shade
trees were destroyed, and buildings
unroofed. In Abbeville the roofs of
several store buildings were shook up
to the extent tliat goods were badly
damaged from the drench, and the
inmates of many homes were kept
busy keeping the household goods
dry by moving them from place to
place and by constant use of the
mop. The actual damage done to
interests of various kinds is hard to
estimate at this time, but will
amount to thousands of dollars.

In Memory of Nellie Henley.
The great -trumpet lias <n- 4, .,

.Again I ■ : . : vie.- ‘hand of

a-, i; ■ , : tin! the second daughter of
All- and Sirs William Henley, On
last Thursday evening just after the
night shadows had fallen, and the
!o\( iy moon arisen in almost noon
day brightness—seemingly to give
peace and joy to the world—the
beautiful spirit took it* llight to the
realms of bliss. The providence of
God seems inexplicable and hard to
bear, but when we know he doeth all
things in wisdom and mercy we can
but say: Thy will he done.
Nellie was of a sunny and loving
nature, always kind and gentle to
those with whom she associated
From her-patience all might learn a
lesson, never refusing to take any
thing that might* be offered, and al
ways, thougFstful of those who called
to set; her. But the devotion of
loved ones and untiring devotion of
kind parents could not stay the cruel
hand of death.
When infants die we feel that they
are only transplanted to a world of
infinite happiness, where the bud will
expand under the tender care of the
creator.
When the aged die, God houses
them in age and feebleness from
storms which beat upon their path
way. but when the young, the vigor
ous, the helpful and the willing ones
are taken, the earth seems so, poor,
barren and desolate without them.
“Leaves have their time to fall,
And flowers to wither at the north
wind’s breath;
And stars to set, but all—
Thou hast all seasons for thine
own, O death!”
Oil. Nellie, can we give you up?
Can we jjjay to the one we love fare
well forever? Can we bury our hope
in the silent tomb? Have we looked
on your dear face for the last time
oil earth? Alas, alas! it is all too
true. The fair jewel we prized has
taken wings of peace and lias flown
to glory. We will not weep longer,
for'this would be rebellion; we will
not mourn, for this is sin. In the
sadness of our hearts and through
the rain of tears, we will look up and
cry, “Blessed be the name of God.,
for his mercy endureth forever.”
We know she cannot come back to
ns. but we may some day go home to
her. We have consolation. We
know she is well. Rather let us weep
for ourselves. The bright winged
messenger of peace still lingers b
oiir midst. We hope to m°r < I ■ ■ .
the glittering strand ho; meet
her with the. angel ba •' How pure
a - v to know ;c will meet and
love again beyond the gulf of death.
“No worm there nips the roses in
the bud,
And death his icy finger never lays
Upon the loved and loving spirits
there!” A Friend.
