Atlanta's new jail does not seem

The largest lot of cotton sold in
Americus this season was purchased
by Mr. E. Simpkins of Albany. The
lot consisted of 1,700 bales and tbe
average price paid was 5 cents per
pound, bringing the neat sum of
$42,000.
One of the oldest attendants at
the South Georgia Conference, winch
convened at llawkinsville last week,
was 11 ev. Howard Thomas, of Way
cross, he is ninety years old and has
attended every conference for more
than fifty years.

A deed has been filed m tbe office
of the clerk of the superior court of
Lumpkin county, which requires
$5,000 worth of revenue stamps.
The deed covered 4,071 acres of
mining land, which sold for $5,000,
000.
Probably the reader has never
heard of the prayer of the old dar
key at tin 1 time of the Charleston
earthquake. He said, in effect: “Oh,
God, we. are in a bad way. Please
come to our help. Don’t send your
son. This ain’t no child’s play;
come yourself. ’’
Bob Brewer, the leader in the
Jesup riot at Jesup nine years ago,
was captured last Sunday night three
miles from Jesup by Sheriff Lyons
and three deputies. When surroun
ded he killed a negro woman m
whose house he was as he thought
she had given him away, he then
fired on the sheriff and posse, they
returning the fire and wounding him
in the face and arm with a load of
shot and he also received a bullet in
his neck. He was carried to Savan
nah for safe keeping. He says he
has never been farther from Jesup
than Jacksonville, Fla., since tin

bered, during Christmas 1889 killed
deputy marshal William Barnhill,
young William Woods, and wounded
