AitiiKYii.u:. Ga.. Dec.. 27 1898.
To the Editor of Tiik (’ukonhu.v :
Please allow me the space in your
paper to refresh 11m minds ol the
citizens of a few tilings that might
be of interest to some. I am very
sorry to see the present situation of
out school (colored.) There was a
charter secured from the legislature
to run two schools in (Ins (own, and
was granted by that honorable body.
It lias been said that the school
would not run the specific, time that
.said charter was asked for. So a
good many concerned in the interest
of the upbuilding of the town and
for the advancement of our school.
We notice that the school has only
one teacher at present, and said
teacher in order to hear the classes,
jias put second-class raeders in third
reader classes and some of them can
scarcely read in said book. We earn
estly nndupru'yfolly ask the town
Board of Education to remedy such,
as we were under the impression
that it was a graded school.
Since said school lias been In op
eration we should have three or more
teachers by this time, and behold!
we only have one. Something must
be wrong in the machinery of our
school because, where there is fric
tioi> il will soon cause a wreck, un
less soon remoded. So we ask the
Board of Education to remedy such
rhings that will cause our school to
retrograde. We ask the members
of the Board to v isit our school and
ask questions of cm rent history that
our children might know and learn
to familiarize themselves to white
faces.
A distinguished while gentleman
gav# our school a visit a few days
since and asked several
that the children should have known
but flould not answer one until he
came to the Oemulgee river; but by
chance one smart little fellow re
membered that he had gone fishing
with his father and knew where it
was. The excuse Prof, made that
his white faces was the cause.

Misses Bessie Rogers and Sallie

The program throughout was exe

A FALSE STATHMENT.
11 is reported that a certain indi
vidual who claims to he a servant
God. and one seeking to do good
mankind; one whose duly it should
lie to foster all good and nolile insti
t u t i o n s wherever located,
| is traveling over the country
ostensibly to sell fruit trees
but takes every opportunity to
do some injury to the Abbeville
Normal College and Business Insti
tute by making erroneous statements
concerning this institution. He
claims to be a frielid-to it, but at the
same time says il ear,not exist. He
says he is deeply interested in its
welfare but in the next breath says
it wil not hist three months on ac
count of funds, that the board of
trustees owe the teachers 8000, and
they are going to leave, etc. Now
this brother may not have any evil
designs in this silly miseheivious
talk, but why does he not better in -
form himself as to the true state of
I affairs and lie would then be in a po
siliou to do this institution some
good if he were so inclined. The
truth of the matter is. this institu
tion is compelled to exist* for live
years at least-. $280,000 worth of
property is bound for its existence.
> he board of 1 rusteos does not owe

by the arrival of new pupils and by
good families moving to town toedu

Moved by Wilkinson and seconded

was offered by Councilman ’Wilkin

“Whereas, that for the past two
years the expenses <>! the city have
been enormous, far exceeding its
resources, and
“Whereas, we know that the only
way to get the city on a more stable

reduce expenses so far as lie in our

“Therefore we recommend the in

office of Clerk and Treasurer and
pay same consolidated $75.00

How To Look Good
Good looks arc really more than
skin deep, depending entirely on a
healthy condition of all the vital
organs. If the liver be inactive
you have a bilious look; 11 your
stomach be disordered you have a
dyspeptic look; it your kidneys be
affected you have a pinched look,
Secure good healtli and you will
surely have good looks. “Electric
