Everyone is rejoicing over the
beautiful spring days we are having
now, and all The farmers have gone
to work and the loafers have begun
to loaf.
Miss Addle Mclver of Richwood,
is spending the week in the city" as
the guest of Miss May Woods.
Virgil Scarborough, of Tippetville
spent Saturday and Sunday last 111
the city.
The largest crowd that wc have
had was in attendance at the literary
society last Friday night ami the
best program that we have had was
have heard it remarked by many that
attended that it was the most inter
esting program that they had ever
heard from beginners—if they will
come again next Friday night we
■will show them a still more interest
ing one than the last. Let all come
out especially to hear George Tatum
and Willie Scarborough. They are
hustlers.
Messrs. Omer Bower and John
Barnes were up from Abbeville Sun
day and spent the day with the young
people of this place. Come again
boys we are glad to have you with us.
Willie Scarborough, visited las
sweetheart up the country last Sun
day. He says he will not have to go
visiting many more times before he
is going to bring her in. How about
it Willie?
Willie Holt, of Abbeville, a stu
dent of the G, N. C. and B. 1.,
spent Saturday and Sunday last in
the city with friends and relatives,
E. S. Hamilton and George Ta
tum say that they wish that every
house oil Society and Way streets
had & telephone instead of a grapho
phoue.
The entertainment at the residence
of Mr. and Airs. J. M, Wiicox last
Saturday night was highly enjoyed
by all that attended.
One of our boys is so carried away
with the long distance telephone
system until he is walking around ail
the time saying Hello! I am so glad
to see yon. He intends to say that
he is glad to talk to a certain young
lady whose name we would give if
space would permit, but nevertheless
ask George Tatum he docsu t mind
telling you.
One of our boys who was summon
ed to attend court on last Monday at
Invinsville, decided that as his girl j
w:i: visiting in Cordele, that he
would drop tier a line and see il he
could not come around that way and i
be with her as far as her home (Mys
tic) everything was agreeable, so on
Sunday evening he boarded the train !
with a glad heart, expecting to win 1
the heart of this young lady on the
way—everything was all OK until;
they arrived at Mystic, when a young
mrn met her and drove away. In
few moments they were pronounced
man and wife. Whether or not this
young man attended court we are
u laole to say; anyway tie is
again this week; but took a different
route. He says lie will never star
to court, courting again, This is a
short story of Ibis, but see John Ca
t, 0Q and get the whole story.

MRS. M. E. WALTON.
A Retrospective View.
Knowing the indignation that 1
may arouse in the minds of some
people, 1 will give you some facts
thinking ones from that state of le
thargy, into which they have fallen.
You may call me anything, or any
name that may suit your feelings.
Did you ever-Stop Hong enough to
come to some conclusion, as to why
you are not getting along better,
why you have not a more comforta
hie home, the children better cloth
ins, and better educational facilities?
It is a fact that all these things
eoul.l be better. but Aliy is it thus?
Knowing the past, we, (you and I)
are better prepared to judge the
present and the fntoie. i et us for
a moment look at the statistics:
Liquors cost $900,000,000 ; Tabac
co $600,000,000; Christian Missions
home and foreign. $5,500,000; ('ler
gymen’s salaries $12,000,000; p U | ( .
lie education $96,000,000. Liquor
and tobacco costs one billion, six
hundred million dollars. Missionary,
clergy and public education, the
paltry sum of $11”,500.000, More
plainly speaking, we PAY $13 for
liquor and tobacco, to every dollar
we divide between missionary, clergy
and the education fund. Our bread
and meat only costs us $800.000,000
about half as much as liquor and
tobacco. Boots, shoes and cotton
goods $407,000,000—about one
fourth of the liquor and tobacco bill
Why is it thus?
Answer the question satisfactorily
to yourself. Will you lie one, who
will say, not one penny for liquor
or tobacco but hundreds for christi
anity and education? Will you use
the means within your reach to make
your o ffspring better qualified to
rule this country, when wc step off
ot the stage ol action?
Let us awake, we will be held re
sponsible for the talents intrusted to
our can:. The time will surely come
when we will cry for the hills and
