OIL DISCOVERED AT ABBEVILLE
Prospectors Arriving.—Options on Property In
Demand .—Qf eat Excitement Prevails,
Abbeville is vibrating with ex
over the prospect of an
early discovery of oil within her cor
porate limits. There are the strong
est indications of oil deposits here,
say persons living here, former res
idents of the oil regions of the north
ern and eastern states. They assert
that the indications are unmistak
able'. Others who are here prospect
ing and who arc familiar with the
oil sections of Ohio and Pennsylva
nia are unqualified in their assertions
that oil exists here.
Capt. John B. Felder Mayor of
Americas, and a man of sterling
business qualities is here prospecting,
and is so well convinced that untold
wealth underlies the soil of Abbe
ville and vicinity, that he is willing
to invest money and provide machine
ery to begin boring at once.
At a meeting of tl*e property ow
ou Tuesday a number of citizens
responded to a proposition of Capt.
Felder which in substance i,s that the
property miners agree to sell John
B. Felder and his associates options
for six months on their unimproved
property at the present valuation..
In case oil is discovered in paying
quantities Felder and his associates
are to have a half interest in the
output. Capt. Felder after secur
ing all the options desired wil,l pro
ceed to Americas, form a stock
company and go to work without
any expense to the property owners
here. Other joint companies are
spoken of, some of them local,
others foreign, sad options .are
booming.
That operations to bore for oil
will begin at once seems to be a fore
gone conclusion; that success will
reward the undertaking there is no
doubt among men who are familiar
with the indications here and in the
oil regions of the north and west.

that the number of students will ap
proximate three hundred. This in

Serious Affray Between White
and Negro—Latter Seriously,
Wounded.
An altercation occurred last 8 a|,
ill-day on Ltypot street at 7
p. m. between, “Lightning" Smith a
white man aiidjJohn Turner a negro
which culminated in the negro’s se»
v'ere carving by the white man,
Turner fired two pistol shots at
Smith when the latter rushed on his
antagonist, disarmed him and in
flicted seven severe though not fatal
knife wounds on his person. During
tiie struggle another negro, Dan
Burkett, a raft hand, rushed upon
Smith and tnreatenpd to shoot h,im
when bystanders, including Mayor
Holton and Mr. Ramon Lee were
obliged to club him severely in order
to disarm him. This negro was ar
rested and earned to jail. The dif
ficulty between Smith and Turner
grew out of a quarrel between boys,
the sons of Smith nnd Turner, A!
though there are conflicting state
ments rni yfle hv p nrUea wl'ft
ed the affray. The above statement
of the occurrence seems to he justi.
fled by a preponderance of testimony,
There seems to be no doubt that
the negro Turner was the aggressor
in the affair.
