ABBEVLLE. GA.. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1901.
THE PRESIDENT WILL RECOVER.
The World is Thankful.
The (1ialjolic.il attempt on the life
of President McKinley sent a thrill
of horror throughout Christendom,
and when the news was flashed over
the country, the heart of the nation
stood still.' Of all the able and
popular men who have tilled the exal
ted position of chiefmagistrate of the
United States he stands forth pre
eminently, as the most popular. No
man who lias ever occupied the pres
ulential chair has been so close to
the heart of the people of every par
ly and ever phase ot political opin
ion. He combines, in his character,
the traits of the soldier, the orator,
and the statesman, in a remarkable
degree. His impulses are generous,
lofty and true. McKinley above all
men has been a peace maker between
the estranged sections of the North
and the South.
His tact and judgement are known
of all men, and his political opin
ions and acts in matters pertaining
to our recently acquired dependencies
have been impelled by true and no
ble impulses, and but for the ham
pering influence ot powerful, politi
cal friends, the record of President
McKinley would stand forth without
a blemish.
That a merciful Providence lias
-safei.r giT.e$
peril, and reserved him for the full
fillineut of his mission, the civilized
world joins this country in thanks
giving.
