QUAIL TO-BEFED SICK
COMES BY MIRACLE
If you aro a’student of Biblical his:
tory, you recall the account of il'u;‘
Lord sending the quails to feed tho
Israclites when they were being led
into the .Land of Promise by Moses.
Well, while not cn such a broad scale,
of course, Providence in somewhat of
a similar nature seems to favor one
of Cordcle’s most worthy institutions,
The Cordele Sanitarium, or at least
one of Cordele’s most prominent cit
izens who is now a patient there.
It happened like this. In the vicini
ty of the sanatorium during the late
summer and fail a covey of quail,
about fifteen in number, have beén
feeding. The institution has a chick
en yard and. there can.he.found o.Luk-,
dred or more pretty white L}ghorp
chickens. The quail were 2’ bit timid
at first and the slightest noist fright
cned them away, but as time pass%‘gb
they grew more tame and became s
familiar with the chickens’ as if they
really belonged in the chicken yard
themselves.
The kind nurses who fed the chick
ens also fed them, for they learned
{o know as well as the chickens when
A FINE SCHOOL SYSTEM
A city without a system of graded
schools maintained and ‘Tun in ac
cordance with the needs of a live, pro
gressive community, is indeed 1o city.
Cordele has its schools that are main
tained on a high level aild never a
week passes that the Dboard of educa
tion does not give hard, conscientious
egort to improving conditions. t
Professor C. W. Brewer came hiere
in January and took charge of the city
schools and has been busy since sys
tematiing the work which fell to him
after Superintendent Lanier resigned.
No time is ever lost by either the
board of education or the school of
ficials in the matter of getting good
resuits in the school work. -
The local communitly maintains the
o’Neal High School and two large
grammer gchools. The buildings are
costly and modern, and so constructed
as to give the best results. The
O’'Neal High School has an auditorium
fully capable of taking care of any

3 ’ CRISP COUNTY COURT HOUSE.
THE CORDELE DISPATC{”
(feading time came. In fact, they liked
:-{h'g; hurses. At least, they were not
muchi afraid of them. '
Then they beeame bolder, and (fre
quént ocasions found them feeding
on the lawn. But here is-where Prov
idence tock a hand, to favor Hon. W.
I, Dorris. The Crisp county repre
sentative was injured in an outomo
bile wreck several weeks ago, .and
ever since his detenticn in the hos
pital, strange e'nou'gh to say, he has
wanted qguail.
The other day the covey of quail,
while feeding on the front lawn,
sought to change their “base of sup
‘plies,” and started to fly over tlxg
‘house, but one poor fellow took the
P};{:ij’; course, and dashed against the
L;tifénu sereen door with such force that
;fij.»~’was killed. So, the appetite of Mr.
Dotris for guail was satisfied:at least
for the time being. The genial rep
renestative had threatened to eat
some of the quail for brealkfast on a
number of occasions, though the close
of the season on March 1 caught him
unawares, and then, too, his condition
would not permit of the exercise it]
takes to handle a gun. \
canveniion or gathering that might
come to this city. This auditorium has
'.:—lzfrge seating capacity and is thor
oughly modern.
Superintendent J. W. Bivins of the
county scheols devotes his attention
to an exccilent service everywhere,
and no county in the state enjoys
the work of a better corps of teachers.
They are alive, energetic, painstaking
and progressive to such an extent that
there is not a rural school¥in the coun
ty which has not all the appearance
of a city schocl. S |
The young of Cordele and Crisp
county have for a number of years en
joyed the best that could be had in
educational training. The system,ié]
always being improved and the mem
bers of the board of education are
{hemselves representative and pogres
give in their educational work to such
an extent that there is not a school
system in this portien of the state
which means more to the young peo-l

SHOOTING AFFRAY
~ FATAL TO SPIKES
i
| P
T. W. WARREN NOW IN CRISP
} COUNTY JAIL—REFUSES TO DIS
‘ CUSS CAUSES OF TRAGEDY.
Clifton Spikes, aged 17, is dead, and
his father, C. A. Spikes, aged 45, is
‘seriously and perhaps fatally wounded,
]as a result of a shooting affray last
}Saturday afternoon at Hatley, in this
county, in which T. W. Warren fired
on the two men with a revolver. War
ren, who is a well known saw mill
‘man, and a brother of Ordinary J. W.
Warren of Wilcox county, is now con
fined in the Crisp county jail.
A bullet from Warren's gun took ef
fect near the heart of young Spikes,
producing death early Sunday mern
ing. Another bullet took effect in the
abdomen of the elder spikes, penetrat
ing the body. Spikes is a farmer and
has a wife and several children. War
ren, whose age is about 35, also has a
wife and several children. All of the
participants in the difficulty are citi
zens of Wilcox county, though the
shooting occurred just over the county
line in Crisp. . |
The difficulty grew out of a quarrel
which occurred about ten days =2go,
when, it is alleged, Spikes employed
a laborer who was already in the em
ploy of Warrén. Warren resented thi3l
action and heated words followed,
threats being passed at the time. ‘
~ Statements are at variance as to
‘the immediate cause leading up to the
difficulty Warren claiming self-defense
and alleging that the elder Spikes,
Clifton Spikes, and a younger son,
Jeff Spikes, aged 15 were advancing
on him with knives and scantlings
when he was forced to draw his re
volver and fire to protect his life. He
was struck, he says, a severe blow
back of the head with a piece of tim
ber. Spikes and his younger son state
that Warren renewed the quarrel
when the men met in Hatley Saturday
afternoon. Attending physicians, it
is alleged, state that both of the
Spiké's were fired on from the back.
After the shooting Warren went to
the store of J. L. Hawkins and request
ed the merchant .to 'ph()nc Sheriff
Ward of the tragedy and inform him
that he desired to surrender. The
sheriff immediately went to the scene
and returned with Warren.
When a Dispatch representative vis
ited the jail for the purpose of inter
viewing the prisoner, he declined to
make a statement, saying that he (li(ll
not care to discuss the case. |
TELFAIR FARMERS ARE l
DIVERSIFYING CROPS '
Diversification of crops is being
practiced more in Telfair county this
year than ever before, according 1o
a statement made by C. M. Tillman
of Mcßae yesterday. Mr. Tillman has
a large hardware business in Mcßae
and has extensive farms in Telfair
county.
“Cotton was pragtically the only
crop raised in my county three years
ago,” he said, “but now there is not
a single exclusive cotton farmer. The
war taught the farmers tie value of
diversification with the result that last
season bumper crops of corn, oais
and hay were raised. Wheat is also
being growa most successfully.”
t Mr. Pillman also stated that al
'trough there are 10 new farmers in
i']‘eltair. more land was cleared last
year than in the last five.

hGood Roads in
.
Crisp County
! Nohting contributes more to the up
‘building of a community, a city or a
state more than good roads. The
state of Georgia has more to its cred
it than any other southern state and
the work is still forging ahead. One
of the greatest movements ever made
in Georgia for the developmeni was
the putting of the state prisoners on
the roads. This assured good work on
the main highways in every county
and within the short time of a year
after the state prisoners began their
work the roads were in excellent con
dition.
This community is not only linked
up with adjeining counties with a sys
tem of roads not to be excelled any
where, but it is possible to reach thisl
city from any point in the state ovcr|
the great number of excellent high
ways that connect up with the roadsl
out of this ccunty.
“The people of Crisp county enjoy ad
vantages not to be had anywhere else.
The farmers have found what good
roads mean and have learned to take
the fullest advantege. Their traflic
to and from town is made easy and
the freight carried is twice what it
was when roads were heavy with
sand. All public thoroughfares are
cut to grade level and overiaid with
a hard clay. This has given the county ]
pretty, servicable roads that have
proven of great value in a thousand
ways. The roads are a distinct asset,
for it enables large numbers of peo
ple to come to Cordele with half the
trouble formerly experienced on Leavy
roads. It makes it possible to bring
lm this point great volumes of farm
output which finds ghipment here for
lmarket. The automobile comes in for‘
its share of the joys of good roads and
in Crisp county ihe owner of a car
finds himself happy on the main high
ways, no matter what the weather
may be. In winter or summer, the
roads are good.
CORDELE HAS LIVE .
PROGRESSIVE MAYOR
Mayor J. Gordon Jones, now almost
a pioneer, found his way into Cor
dele in July, 1896, nearly twenty years
ago. ITis birthplace is Ilogansville,
Troup county. Ile went as a boy to
California and there worked out his
own education. He was admitted to
the bar in Georgia in 1895, coming the
next year to Cordele,
Here he practiced law (and did his
best) now and then getting into news
paper work and scon he became
known over a wide section of coun
try. He served a number of times in
¢ity councii, but in 1914 was chosen
mayor and took ofiice following May
or Fred Harder.
Mayor Jones has had little else to do
with politics. As mayor of Cordele
he has won popularity rapidly. = His
