SOCIETY
Lord of the sword and the sickle,
God of the East and the West, '
We bring on our knees thanksgiving,
For the gift that we hold most blest;
Not for the golden bounty that fur
thers .
Each fruitful field,
Assurance that toward out nation thy
" Vials of wrath are sealed;
Not alone for the yoeman fathers,
' 'Who won in the fight to be free:
Not for our homes and headthstones,
Though soul of our souls they be;
Not that'we dwell in safety, and
.Sheltered from wars alarms,
But as mothers of men, we thank Thee,
- That our sons may die in our
arms.

Tuesday afternoon a geodly number

delightfully entertained. This occas
ion was devoted to the anti-cigarette
department of the W. C. T. U., of
which Mrs. Goddard is superintendent.
An excellent program, comprising
scripture readings, music, recitations
and discussion was rendered. Miss
Louise Irksburger delighted the audi
ance with a recitation.
Miss Nell Denton, principal of the
Northern Heights school, gave her ex
perience with the cigarette in the
school room, as effecting the moral and
physical natures of the habitues. Miss
Denton contrasted most forcefully the
marked difference in the mental and
physical progress of those addicted to
the use of cigarette and non-users. A
pleasant season of social converse and
a delightful cake and cream course
closed this enjoyable occasion.

Though her countless admirers do
not require Mary Pickford to give any
further proof of her amazing versatili
ty, this supreme screen favorite ren
ders another novel character-interpre

pany’s spectacular and thrilling pro
duction, “Poor Little Peppina.,” As
Peppina, the boundiess scope of Mary
Pickford’s art is illustrated in her de
lineation of the varlous roles of the
child of wealthy Americans kidnapped
by Italians and made to work in a
Sicilian vineyard, a stowaway dis
guised as a boy, a newsie, a bootblack,
a fruit vender, an, employee of an
opium den a‘messenger boy, and final
ly, the restored millionaire’s daugh

diversity of atmosphere and interest,
and with its many dramatic and amus

will undoubtedly be accepted as one
of Miss Pickford’s foremost triumphs.
