NEGRO “JACK THE RIPPER”
TURNE WEAPON ON SELF
Atlanta, June 20.—1 n the person of
Russell Wootson, an epileptic negro
who ran amuck and slashed his wife
to' pieces with a butcher knife, and
then turned the knife en himself and
inflicted nine wounds that will prove
fatal, the Atlanta police believe they
have captured at last the terrible
“Jack the Ripper” who is generally
credited with a series of shocking
murders of negro women that threw
the darkey population into a panic
of alarm several months ago.
Almost every night for several
months a negro woman was murdered
in‘cold blood in some adark street or al
ley, and in every case the slayer used
a knife to cut his victim’s throat from
ear to ear. The viciims were harm
less negro women who worked for
their living, and most of them were
cooks in white families and were slain
on their way home at night.

Value of the Farm Woodlot
J. B. Berry, Prof. Forestry, Ga. State
College Of Agriculture.
Just what value do you place on
that patch of woods on your farm,
or do you consider it only as an ob
stacle to the cultivation of the land?
A hundred years ago timber was very
plentiful and prices low. At the pres
ent time the best of the timber in
the Kast and South has been logged,
or destroyed, and lumber prices are
advancing rapidly. No longer are the
big timber holders of the United
States recklessly logging their lands
—rather, they are holding their tim
ber to take advantage of the rapid
increase .in wood .values. It is .con
servatively estimated that the pres
ent forests of the TUnited States
cannot supply the demand for
more than seventy-five years.
When this is gone we shall have to
compete with England and Germany
in the world’s markets. During the
yvear 1914 lumber prices in Germany
ranged about four times as great as
in the United States; and these prices
showed an increase of 10 per cent
to 15 per cent over the current prices
of the year 1913. If this then is true—
{hat the present lumber prices of the
United States will be increased 300
per cent or 400 per cent during the
next twenty or twenty-five years—can
there be any doubt as to the value
of a timber investment? i
The South is particularly favored
in the matter of wood produc
tion. Nowhere else do trees and for
ests grow more rapidly. During the
course of twenty years a second
growth thicket of old field pine and
yellow poplar has developed into a
forest, the trees of which average 12
to 15 inches in diameter. i e

COMMENDS RESTRAINT
OF MAIDEN’S FATHER
Atlanta, June 16.—Judge Charles
Whiteford Smith, of the DeKalb coun

posing the maximum pézjalty on Mon
roe Tanner, a negro found guilty of
otiempted criminal assault,:commend
vd the father of the young girl at

According to the evidence at the

The young girl was able to recog

SMITH-PRATT WEDDING
; OCCURRED IN WASHINGTON
Atlanta, June 20.—Many Georgians
and southerners are interested in the
recent marriage at Washington, D. C.,
of Miss Callie Hoke Smith to Mr. Ly
man Pratt.
Miss Smith is the youngest child of
United States Senator and Mrs. Hoke
Smith. The wedding, owing to the
delicate health of Mrs. Smith, was at
the residence of Senator Smith in'the
presence of only the family.
The ceremony was performed by Dg.’
J. H. Taylor, pastor of the Central
Presbyterian church of Washington,
D. C., the church which President Wil
son attends. Dr. Taylor is an old
friends of the family of Mr. Pratt.
Through an error of a reporter, it was
announced that Rev. E. L. Buckley
performed the ceremony, while in fact
he was at the same time marrying a
different couple in a different part
of Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Praii, after their hon
eymoon, will return to Washington,
where they will live for the next year.
After that they will make their home
in New York city where Mr. Pratt
will practice law.
EARLY DECLINE IN
GASOLINE 1S PROMISED
Washington, June 16.—An early and
rapid decline in the price of gasaline
was predicted by H. G James, of Kan

fying before the Federal Trade Com
missioner’s inquiry in the the gasoline
price increase.® James said jobbers
‘are now paying less for gasoline than
they had paid for months, and that the
retailers would feel the decline with
in a few months. \
