SILVERTON TIRE OFFSETS
RISE IN GASOLINE PRICES
With the price of gasoline soaring,
when tlie car owner figures his cost of
upkeep, next in importanc to gasoline
comes the cost of tires. One of the
bhig tire manufacturers has come to
the front and made a "long forward
stride toward reducing the cost of gas
oline through a tire construction which
greatly reduces internal friction.
This largest rubber factor in Ameri
ca, the B. F. Goodrich company of Ak
ron, Ohio, rightfully credited with mak
ing *he first pneumatic tire on this
continznt, in a recent announcement
rraced their present Silvrtown Cord
'Tire back to the Palmer principle of
‘construction used in Bicycle Tires way
'back in 1892. i
. In doing away with the thread fabric
lin the Silvertown Cord Tire, taking the
‘35)(5 size as an example, each cord is
strong enough to sustzin the weight of
a 250 pound man. The Silvertown
also differs from the former Goodrich
Palmer-Web Tire, as well as all other
thread fabric tires, (so-called “cord”
tires) in that it has only two layers
of real cord, thus reducing the possi
bility of internal friction and internal
heating.

THIRD TEUTON LINE
IS IN FRENCH HANDS
JOFFRE’S ARMY NEARING PE
RONHME, LONG SOUGHT GOAL—
TOWN IS SURE TO FALL.
Paiis, July 10.—The French advanc:
ed their line south of the Somme
today a mile and a half, capturing
the Zerman third positions along a
length of three and one-half miles,
and a-2 now within a line of Pe
ronne. French critics believe that the
captura of Peronne now is a question
almost of hours.
Under the system of interlocking
echelons it was the turn of the right
wing to push forward, the other eche
lons on center and left being saved
to effect the moves required of them.
The troops south of the Somme ap
parently had made good use of their
breathing spell. When the word was
given they moved forward with the
precision of a well-ciled machine.
They swept across the northern end
of the two plateai®;, which face Pe
ronne, clearing out the German posi
tions and establishing themselves sol
idly ia the trenches, which had been
turned into quagmires by the com
bined cfforts of bombardments and
incessant rain.
The Germans offered the best re
sistance they could, but the French
artillerv has been xeeping up a for
midable fire upon their lines of com
munication making it almost impos
sible for them to get either reinforce
ments or food in suitable quantities.
Today’s success is important in that
it should enable the French heavy
artillery to push forward into a po
sition whence it can pour a fire into
the flanks and rear of the Germans,
who are resisting at Combles, four
miles to the north on the other bank
of the Seomme. Today’s movements of
the French paved the way for the
next move of the central echelon, for
which preparation continued steadily
all day, virtually without interference
from the Germans.

RAINS AND STORMS HIT
GEORGIA FARMS HARD
Atlanta, Ga., Wednesday, July 12.—
The past week was unfortunate for.ag
ricultural interests over much of Geor
gia. It was characterized by contin
uous rains, ranging in amount from
moderate near the coast and in the
southeastern portion of the state, to
extremely heavy precipitation in the
Chattahoochee valley; some stations
report=d from twelve to fifteen inches
of rainfall for the week. Destructive
floods are now prevailing in the riv
ers, w'th great damage to lowland
crops and other property, the extent
of which can not yet be estimated. Up
land crops in several sections were
also damaged by the washing rains
and hizh local winds. No farm work
was poscible, and crops are generally
becoming grassy. Shipments of peach
es and melons were delayed and both
crops ‘njured by excessive maoisture,
The rainfall where not excessive has
bheen beneficial to corn especially and
a large crop is assured.
