, Polio-myelitis is a disease principal
1y occurring in children of from one
to five years of é,ge—hence the syno
nym, infantile paralysis. The cause of
the disease is probably a microscopi
cal germ. The disease occurs as oso
lated cases or sometimes as a wide*
spread epidemic. There seems to have
been an increase in the prevalence
of the disease during the Ilast few
years. It is estimated that from 1907
to 1910 there were at least 20,000 cas
es in the United States. It is an es
tablished fact that 1t is a contagious
disease, the contagion being transmit
ted by direct contact, by a third per
son, by cats and dogs, and possibly by
flies and other ingsects. The incuba
tion period—that is, the time elapsing
between the time of exposure and the
time -of development of symptoms—is
probably from one to fourteen days.
While adults may be attacked the
greatest incidence is among young
children, so the.course of the disease
will be described from that standpoint.
The attack usually comes on sud
denly. A child which has ben pre
viously well and healthy suddenly is
taken with fever, complains of head
ache, aching in the lin®®% and back,
becomes dull and somnolent or rest
less and delirious. Theére may also be
vomiting and diarrhoea, twitching of
the muscles or _convulsions. Occas

ionally there is' stifness of the mus
cles in the neck and limbs, and fre
quently there is pain and tenderness in
the back and lower extremeties. The
duration and intensity of these symp
toms are variable, lasting from one
or two, days to as long as a week or
more, After the above symptoms have
subsided the parents notice that the
child is more or less exiensively par
alyzed. The muscles of the trunk are
sometimes involved, but usually the
paralysis of the extremeties is more
noticeable. Either one or both legs,
both legs and an arm, both arms, or
all the extremeties, and the parts feel
cold and clamy, looks somewhat blue,
and in time, unless recovery takes
place, becomes much smaller and shor
ter than the extremeties not involved.
The reflexes in th diseased limbs are
lost but sensibility is retained. After
a time, unless the disease has proved
fatal during the acute stage, the child’s
general condition improves and some
times the.. paralysis ..entirely ..disap
pears, and the child is again restored
to perfect health. Unfortunately, how
ever, not infrequently the paralysis
persists to the same degree as in the
bginning, or only partially clears up.
Various deformities may take place as
a result of the contraction of the
healthy muscles being unopposed by
the paralyzed muscles. In this way
curvature of the spine, club feet and
the like are brought about.
The above symptoms and changes
oceur as a result of the poisons thrown
off by the germs causing the diseuse
first attacking the entire body anc la
ter becoming localized in part of tune
gray matter of the spinal cord. The
extent of the paralysis which results
depends on the extent of the destruc
tion of this gray matter; and the parts
paralyzed depend on the level of the
cord attacked.
Prevention.

As the disease is contagious, its
spread is to be guarded against in the
same manner as in the case of other
contagious diseases, such as scarlet
fever, measles, diphtheria, and so on.
The patient should be promptly iso
lated, and a physician put in charge
of the case as early as possible. No
more people than absolutely necessa
ry should be exposed, and children
should be espcially exciuded from the
room.
Sputum and mucous from the nose
and throat should be caught on rags
or paper and burned at once. The rine
and -bowel movements-should he thor
oughly mixed with a strong disinfect
ant before they are thrown out. A
strong, freshly made whitewash is a
good disinfectant, as are also formalin,
carbolic acid and chlorinated lime.
Cats and dogs may carry the dis
ease; therefore they should be kept
out of the room.
The fact that flies may carry the
disease should not be overlooked. The
sick room should be well screened,
and any flies gaining entrance into
