Manufacturing Hog
- Cholera Serum
At the live stock conference held in
Moultrie récently, Dr. H. H. Rothe,
bacteriologist in chargeé of the Georgia
Serum Laboratory, located at Moul
trie, for the manufacture of hog chol
era serum gave out some very interest
ing information regarding the manner
of producing this serum. In the lan
‘{'guage of the ordinary layman the doc
"tor» said:
“In every animal iiere are certain
‘upbuilding forces that go to work im
mediately to repair any damage done
by disease or hurt. If these forces
succeed in building faster than the
disease effects tear do%'n, the patient
recovers, if not he dies. The effect of
serum is to help the upbuilding forces.
How to get this serum? :
“A seemingly perfectly sound pig is
taken, dieted, tested and treated for a
certain number of days to ascertain
without a doubt that he is a good sub
ject, well and hearty. Then he is giv
en a dose of cholera germs. At the
same time he is given a treatment to
assist his natural ability to overcome
the cholera infection.
This is called ‘“double” or ‘“simul
lfaneous" treatment. If he gets well
his system is charged time and again
'with this overcoming treatment until
he is so full of it, that it is impossi
ble to give him cholera. .
’ “Then at certain entervals his blood
is drawn (from the end of his tail) un
til he has give up up all his life blood.
This is taken into the laboratory and
manufactured into serum.
“This serum must yet be tested to
see if it is effective. A litter of pigs
is secured and part of them treated
with this serum. Then all of them
are ' treated with cholera germs. If
the serum pigs get well and the oth
ers die from this treatment, then the
serum is offered to the public.
“Serum is administered to protect
the pig from cholera. Not as a medi
cine or cure, but as a preventive.”
