Georgia Can Raise

Spring Lambs Bring Fancy Prices And

A g |
MILTON P. JARNAGIN, Prof. Animal
Husbandry, Ga. State Col. Of Agri.
With lambs selling at 11 and 12
cents per pound live weight, no live
stock undertaking is likely to prove
‘more profitable nor turn profits more
iquivkl'\' than sheep raising. For the
past 30 years there has been a steady
!m crease in the number of sheep in
}ihi-" country. This is likewise true
[nl‘ the whole world. Raising and sell
ing spring lambs bring the best re
{urns and no great amount of capital
necd be involved in the undertaking,
Native ewes may be purchased and a
ipm'chl'ml sire of one of the standard
!.nnzl‘.nn breeds mated with them not
later than the middle of September,
’\\hivh will bring the lambs to drop
betore the middle of February.
E During the fall and winter the ewes
| should have abundance of grazing on
| such crops as rye, vetch and crimson
éx'h»\'vr, bur clover, rye alone, and if
oats and wheat have attained a rank
| growth it will do no harm to graze
| them on these crops. If ewes are in
| thin flesh it pays to feed them a lit
tle grain during the fall and winter.
| After lambs have begun to take all
fnf their mother’s milk, ewes should
|be put on luxuriant pastures. A creep
f‘m‘ pen into which the lambs can go
| and the ewes can not, zhouid be pro
| vided, and in the creep put flat troughs
in which feed equal parts of corn, oats
land bran. By this method it should
be no trouble to make the youngsters
average 70 pounds each by May. The
ewes should average 114 lambs each.
On the basis of present market one
could expect to sell them at 10 cents
per pound as early lambs.
There is room for a small flock of
‘hreeding ewes on every farm in Geor
