THE CORDELE DISPATCH, SUNUAY, SEPT. 24, 1916
PLANNING FOR TEMPORAL
POWER OF VATICAN
TL.ondon, Sept. 21.—A mevement in
favor of re-establishment of the tem
poral power of the Pope is reported
by the Armsterdam correspondent of
the Exchange Telegraph Company to
have been inaugurated by Roman
Catholic newspapers of Germany, with
the idea of drawing the vatican wholly
away from Italian influence.
The Colgne Volks eZitung, a p*om
inent Catholic newspaper, is quoted
as saying Germany giyes a free hand
to German Catholics and as denounc
ing the law of papal guarantees adop
ted by the Italian government in 1870
at the time of the ending of the tem
poral sovereignty of the Pope. .
All Austrian and German. Catholic
papers are following this lead, the dis
patch says. It adds that the move
ment is believed to have bheen inau
gurated by Cardinal Hartman, Arch
bishop of Cologne, with the idea of
gaining representations for the vat
ican at the peace conference after the
war,

took place at Chemnitz Saturday af

ed when the news arrived of the

perse and were charged by Hussars.
Five Hussars were killed and forty

?TEUTONS START FORCES TO
| HALT RUSSIAN MARCH
Fighting Turns in Favor of Central
| Powers Under Von Mackensen.
London, Sept. 21.—Fighting on a
huge scale is in progress along the
eastern war front whence the center
of interest has shifted, following the
let-up in the heavy allied attacks along
the Somme.
Kvidence is accumulating that the
central powers are devoting their main
attention to the campaigns in the east,
concentrating large forces against
Roumania, notably under Field Mar
shal Von Mackensen, in Dobrudja, and
putting all possible available men in
the field to stop the Russian march
on Lemberg by way or Halicz, and the
menacing drives of the Russians and
Roumanians in the Carpathians and
Transylvania.
to the British commander, Gen. Sir
Douglas Haig,” says the news agency.
“1t is said the British occupied the
villages of Flers, Martinputch and
Courcelette in the first day’s fighting,
although it had been planned to take
them in the course of four days of
battle.
“Nevertheless the British were en
abled to make this advance only after
cleven weeks of the most desperate
efforts. The results of the battle of
the Somme should be gauged by con
sidering the amount of French and
Belgian territory occupied by the Ger
mans, which amounts in all to about
50,000 square kilometers. Of this 29,
000 is Belgian and 21,000 French. The
efforts by the French and British have
resulted in the conquest of only 1,500
square kilometers, of three per cent.
“The price paid for this territory
is appalling. According to a conserv
ative estimate the British lost 350,000
men up to Sept. 15. This together with
the French losses, brings up the total
to about a half a million men.”
