PLANTING TREES IN THE FALL
“rom St. Joseph's News-Press:
There is a general impression that
he time to plant trees is in the
ipring. With the approach of sum
ner, people seem much more inter
sted in pilans of improvement. They
wre making gardens and clearing up
rrounds, and it is easy to interest
hem in the idea of permanent beau
ificaticn with foilage. But, accord
ng to the experts, there is no time
setter suited for tree planting than
he fall. There is less demand then
n the sapling for vitality, and it can
pend its energy in acquiring roots.
The beauty of a town is more de
-endent on tree growth than any other
hing. No matter how attractive hous
»s you may put in a new town or
iew section, they will always lock
are and staring unless partly screen
d by .trees. And a sireet of small
omes iooks sordid and homely un
oss it has foilage. It is surprising
ow many defects are covered bv tree
rowih. Homes may need painting,
nt if there are beautiful trees in
he sireet or on the grounds to at
~act attention, minor faults pass un
wticed.

CANCER IS INCREASING
IN SOUTHERN STATES
Atlanta, Nov. 15.—Cancer is on the
increase in the southern states, ac
cording to the report of a committee
of the public health section of the
medical men’s convention now in ses
=ion in Atlanta.
in order to -promote the study of
the dread disease, the committee very
strengly urges the importance of more
complete vital statistics by municipal,
county and state health authorities.
The medical profession has not yet
discovered the cauge of cancer. In
srder to determine whether or not it is
hereditary, a record must be kept of
every case. so that new cases in the
future can be traced back to old cases
‘n the present, if any relation or con
nection exists between them.
