GEORGIA SOUTHERN AND GULF
PUTS ON MORNING TRAIN FROM
ALBANY TO CORDELE FOR
BENEFIT OF PEOPLE WHO
WANT TO COME HERE.
The Georgia Southwestern and Gulf
Railway has provided extra passen
ger train service over its-line for the
benefit of the holiday shoppers who
live at a distance and those who would
come to Cordele now have splendid
opportunity to come here and do all
the trading they wish and return in
the afternoon. The extra passenger
train went into service yesterday. It
leaves Albany at 6:45 in the morning
and reaches Cordele at 8:15. Return
ing, it leaves Cordele at 8:45 and ar
rives in Albany at 10:25 in the morn
ing. ’
Those along the line who wish to
come here will have opportunity to
come in on this early train in the morn
ing and go back on the regular after
noon train leaving here at 2.15.
During the operation of this extra
train esrvice, the regular morning
train to Albany will be held one hour
and will leave at nine o’clock instead
of eight o’clock. This serviece contin
ues for ten days and will be discontin
ued after December 26.
The business men of Cordele have;
expressed appreciation of this splen
did accommodation which has been
arranged and they are making plans
to see that all shopping accommoda
tions that can possibly be had over
this line be brought to Cordele. This
service will not be given on Sunday,
only the regular trains being run.
BLUE LAWS HELP BUSINESS
GREATLY IN LOCAL HOTELS
- Listen here, good people! Nobody
connected with anything that looked
like a business down town has had a
particle of sympathy with the blue
law cnforcement. (On the side and
softly, the officers have not relished
the duty of enforcing them). But
here’s a testimonial which is about
to change the attitude of some of the
balking business people.
The Cordele Hotels are said never
to have been so crowded on Sunday in
all their history. Last Sunday more
than one of the best of them had
crowds that had to wait at the noon
hour for luncheon. The Sunday bus
iness is perhaps doubled. The hotel
people have been among those who ac
cepted terths with backs all bowed up.
They didn’t want the blue laws even
mentioned. They, like the rest of us,
ar inclined to be proud of the good
name of Cordele,. and they thought
just the least bit of reference might
make it hard to determine whether a
MERRY -GO-ROUND OPERATING
INCORDELE--HURRY NOW, BOYS
Boys, somebody has let in that mer
ry-go-round and it's a peach just like
they said it was. It is up and turning
and tooting the whistles on the rear
of the Westbrook lot, right up town.
Of course, you cannot get a ride on
Sunday, but tomorrow business will
be brisk. Everybody will go around
and see it and take a turn or two.
F. Nelson, advance agent, and Rob
ert Wagner, owner are both here and
heartily enjoying their opportunity to
DEALERS SAY TIME WILL BE RE
QUIRED TO HANDLE ON AC
COUNT. OF SHORTAGE -- OF
FREIGHT CARS.
Fertllizer dealers are urging all
farmers and planters to devote their
immediate attention to arranging for
the coming season’s supply of fertili
zer. This is considered necessary on
account of the prevailing shortage of
freight cars and the general demorali
(zation of freight traffic over the coun
try.
Local fertilizer men wish to conduct
the local business in satisfactory man
ner to local farmers and therefore
urge the early purchase so that there

CONGREGATIONS OF ALL CHURCH

HOUSE SQUARE AT 5 O'CLOCK
NEXT SATURDAY EVENING.
The congregations of all the church
es and all persons who are to take part
in the singing of the Christmas carols
will meet Saturday evening next at
five o’clock on the court house equare
at the call of a bugle. The crowds
gathering will sing “Joy to the World.”
Mayor Jones on horseback will lead
the march which will be down Thir
teenth avenue to Third street, thence
into Twelfth and back to the monu

down Seventh street to the Suwanee
hotel and into Eleventh avenue to the
public library park where the munici
pal Christmast tree will be prepared.
Messrs. Jim Francis and J. F. Car
men will lead the orchestra which will
head the procession of singers. All
persons who can play an instrument
are urged to join in making the music.
for the occasion.
Large numbers of people will have
part in the celebration and the sing
ing of the carols. This is an annual
affair provided by the lady members
of the Symphony club and its popu
larity already assures community wide
participation.
EARLY MORNING FIRE DESTROYS
TWO NEGRO RESIDENCES
Houses belonging to John Lewis and
Will Perry, negroes, were destroyed
by fire early Saturday morning. The
fire is thought to have originated from
incendiary causes at the Lewis
house which first caught and was prac
tically destroyed before the fire com
pany arrived. The flames spread to
Perry’s house. Both houses were par
tially insured, and Perry’s house was
only partially destroyed.
single stranger would tarry over Sun
day.
But you anti-blue law advocates, get
out your kerchielf and weep. It
is the truth that from the very first
Sunday the blue laws were announced
every hotel in town has been crowded
on Sunday and Sunday now really is
the one big day. Five perfectly good
looking ladies sat in the lobby of one
of the hotels Sunday evening and
waited till it was their turn for the
meals, so crowded was the now pop
ular hosterly.
Don’t mention blue laws, but just
ask a local hotel man how he likes
his Sunday business. Then wait. He
will smile for you. Gwan now! Don’t
be trying to say all this is due to
the campaign for a good,—very good,
—oh, so very good town. But the bus
iness is there and the hotel men are
powerfully busy on Sunday. It's
mighty fine that the blue laws don’t
apply to them.
do. what numbers of other shows can
not do,—come in and have a social
stay with the little boys and girls of
Cordele. .
A generous portion of the proceeds
from the merry-go-round will be do
nated to charity. Messrs. Frank Bar
tholomew, Ed Kennedy and W. O.
Roberts have arranged for the show
in order to have something with which
to make merry during the holidays.
‘may not be hurtful delay when the
fertilizer supplies are required on the
farms.
HEAVY HOLIDAY TRAVEL
HAS BEGUN WITH A RUSH
Increased travel characteristic of
Christmas holidays ha sbeen much in
evidence for the past several days. It
is noticeable that the heavy Christmas
travel has begun some earlier this
year than heretofore, or perhaps this
opinion is createéd from the fact that
the travel is heavier tha nlast year,
due to the better financial situation
throughout the country. Cordele, with
its thirty or more passenger trains
daily can easily distinguish the in
crease in passenger traffic from day
to day.
Mr. and Mrs. Bascom Dixon of Lilly
were shopping in Cordele Friday.

'DESOTO CITIZENS TANGLE
| CAR WITH FALLEN WIRES
J. G. Hudson and Ned Green, citi
zens of DeScto, have a grievance
against a line operating company that
will probably result in a law suit for
damages. A fallen wire, paralleling
the Seaboard railway, did considerable
damage to the automobile of the De-
Soto citizens nd inflicted painful per
sonal injuries to Green, according to
their claims when their car ran into
it. The accident occurred at the in
tersection of the railway, Eleventh
avenue and Tenth “street.
The top was torn off the car, ac
cording to the men, and Green was
cut about the nose. The wire also
cut through Grecn’s overcoat. They
have retained, a. Qardele. atiorney to
represent them and have made plans
to enter suit against the company.
porch lights are as common where
these plants are in use as they are
in the city. Then there is the great
advantage of having the barn lighted.
jElectrica] chandeliers have been in
‘stalled in some homes and the electric
cooker and iron and other conven
iences have been obhtained.
These plants on the farm of P. B.
Gleaton, Willie Williams and others
have attracted a great dea! of inter
est and elicited much faverable com
ment. The plants are hecoming' com
mon over the section, numbers having
been installed in Crisp and adjgining
counties.
Bids have recently been made to .
the county commissioners of Crisp for
installing a plant at the county convict *
farm, and such improvement appears
to meet with approval on the part of
the commissioners.

* Mr. Stallings is now operating a
saw mill cn Flint river which assures
a steady supply of oak, hickory, ash,
elm and other hard woods necessary.
A careful canvass of the territory
on Cordele’s various railroads devel
ops the fact that the entire output can
be disposed of within 40 miles of the
factory. It is expeeted that the plant
will be in full operation by February
15th next year.
