Position of Neutrals Becoming Intol
. .erable—Must determine How to Safe
guard Interests if War Continues.
. ~Washington, Dec. 22.—Officials and
.fiiplomats here, analyzing teh Presi
_dent's ‘note, say that the President,
- in acting, was also considering what
' would. have to be the course of the
. United States to consarve its interests ‘
as ‘a neutral if the war is continued.
Coupled with the president’s recentl
declaration that the position of neu
trals was becoming intolerable, they
attached much significance to the
statement in the note that his sugges
tion comes from a neutral wohse in-l

for its early conclusion arises out of |

how best to safeguard those interests |

Population of United States Contin
ues to Shift to the Cities—U. S. Pcp
ulaticn Now 102,017,312.
Washington, Dec. 22.—The popula
tion of the United States continues to
shift to the cities, according to es
timates announced today by the cen
sus bureau. The estimates, based on
the rate of population increases from
1900 to 1910, disclosed that 40.9 per
cent of the country’s inhabitants now
live in cities of more than 8,000, as
against 38.9 per cent in 1910. The en
tire population of continental United
States for 1916 has already been esti
mated at 102,017,312. The total states,
territories and United States posses
sions is put at 112,444,620.
Ten states have taken census since
the last federal census in 1910 and sev
en show population increases. Kansas,
South Dakota and Wyoming decreased
from 1910 to 1915, the greatest reduc
tion being in Wyoming, 2.9 per cent.
The least increase was in lowa, with
a growth of but 6 per cent. The great
est increase was 22.5 per cent in Flor
ida. In Florida, Towa and Massachu
setts the percentage of increase from
1905 to 1915 was greater than from
1900 to 1910, but in the other seven
states it was much higher from 1900
to 1910 than from 1905 to 1915. In Kan
gas, North and South Dakota and Wyo
ming the rate of growth from 1910 to
1910 was nearly double that from 1905
to 1915. In lowa a decrease of 7,082
was shown from 1900 to 1910 and an
increase of 148,016 from 1905 to 1915.
In New Jersey, New York and Rhode
Island slight decreases were indicated
by the state returns of 1905 and 1915,
as compared with the increase from
1900 to 1910.
In the past six years the growth in
the white population was 10,000,000
and the negro population about three
fourths of a million.
ONLY TEN PER CENT OF
CONVERTS HAVE “STUCK”
Atlanta, Dec. 22.—That only about
ten per cent of the converts of the
big revival held in Atianta a year ago
have “stuck” to their religiocn, while
the other ninety per cent just natur
ally evaporated, is substantially the
conclusion reached by Atlanta church
people after a careful canvass of the
net results for the purpose of ascer
taining whether Atlanta’s experience
would prove similar to those revival
swept cities in the east.
The general impression seems to
be after investigating the cases of
those who joined the church through
the influence of the revival, that not
more than one in ten professed con
verts derives any lasting effect upon
character and conduct.
Of course it is argued on the other
hand that the ten per cent who are
still in the stright and narrow path
abundantly justify the revival, and it
is pointed out that some of the world’s
greatest savers of souls were con
verts by this method.
