ENLIST AND GO TO COLLEGE
Many a 1918 high school graduate
is debating with himself this year:
Shall T go te college? or shall 1 enlist
lut cnce for military cervee?
The War Department has just made
it possible to do both. It says, in effect,
to the ambitions voung American:
“You serve your country by going (o
; college, To make sure that yvou do not
lose therehy the opportunity of serving
! vour country in a direct military cap
"'- ity, vou will he asked to join the
é-p(-rial U. 8. Army ('(:”Ggu training
‘units that are to be formed, You will
be liabie for service at a moment's
!nmiv:o. but because you are worth
- more to the nation with your college
’u'ainlng than without it, vou will he
expect-d to stay in ccllcg.e until called
!h_v the Government.”
I The War Department’s announce
ment provides that beginning with
I(—fr~pl‘erubf\r, 1918, military instruction,
lnndr-'r offierg and non-commissioned
offiers of the Army, wiil be provided
[in every institution of college grade
enrolling for the instruction one hun
[" dred or more able-bodied stundents
over the age of eighiecn. The neces
sary military equipment will bhe piro
vided by the Government, There will
be ereated a military training unit in
cach institution. Enlistment will be
purely voluntary, but all students over
l the age of eighteen will be encouraged
| to enlist. The enlistment will consti-

i «f the Government not to call the mem

"ll:t,\' until they have reached the age
of twenty-one, unlesg urgent military
necessity compels an earlier call.
Students under cighteen, and there
fore not legally eligible for enlistment,
will be encouraged to enroll in the
fraining units. Provision will he made
for -«coordinating the Reserve officers’
“raining Corps system, which exists
} 1 abeut onethivd of the collegiate in
%‘lih:!i('n:;, with this hroadep plan,
~ “This new policy aims to accomp
lsh a two-fold object,” the Wad De
partment announces, “first, to develop
0s a great miflitary asset the 'large
i!mdy of young men in the colleges;
‘<¥|l'nu.t:h indiscriminate volunteering,
hy offering to the students a definite
nd immediate mwilitary statugs” |
No nation has made such generous
nrovision for combined military and
college education agz has the United
States in thds new plan, The youth
who avail themselves of the privilege
will be serving their country’s im
mediate as well as future needs.
! SCARING UP TRADE |
I Saw a business letter the other day

new one but just ene of many of the
methods that have been used to scarve 1
