POWER CUT GREATER
IN NATIONAL CAPITAL, STORES
DO NOT OPEN UNTIL 10 A. M.
SO GOVERNMENT EMPLOY
EES CAN USE CARS
Atlanta, Ga. October, 25.-—Although
Atlanta’s electric lights have been re
duced to the irreduciple minimum,
and street car service has been cur
tailed one-third, Atlanta can still
learn something in the way of motive
power economies from the city of
Washington, according to W. Rawson
Collier, sales manoger of the Geor
gia Railway & Power Company, who
has just returned from that city on
matters connected with the war.
The order curtailing Atlanta’s con
sumption of eclectric lights and cut
ting the street car service 33 1-3 per
cent was issued by the War Indus
tries Board though Captain Milten
berger, an army officer sent here to
devise ways and means of conserving
power. On his trip to Washington Mr
Collier, above referred to, found that
the .War . Industries Board, is very in
sistent on having every available
kilowatt of electrical energy place at
the disposal of Atlanta industries
which are working on war contracts.
Hence the public must deny itself in
order to help win the war.
In Washington, states Mr. Collier,
the stores do not open until 10 o’clock
so as to keep the street care open for
government employees riding down
to work. Morever , the automibles
carry signs showing their destina
tions, and any government worker
can signal car and ride as far on his
on his way as he is going, so as to
reduce the volum of street railway
traffic as much- as.
FLYING MACHINE WENT
ON OWN MOMENTUM
An American Airdome in France,
Sept. 30.—An experiment recently
conducted by an air pilot revealed
how thoroughly mere flight has been
stabilized. In mid-air the pilot releas
ed his hand and foot controls entire-
Iy and touched nothing for twenty
miles, leaving his machine to fly it
self until just before landing.
“You couldn’t do that with an auto
mobile,” he laughed, after describing
the performance to fellow flyers.

Atlanta, Ga. October. 25.—Further
sugar restrictions on manufactures
have been annouced by Dr. Andrew
M. Soule, federal food administrator
for Georgia, to be in effect during the
months of November and December.
Manufacturers of soft drinks will
be allowed to use only 25 per-cent of
their normal supply of sugar. At pre
sent they are using 50 per-cent of
normal.
Manufactures of ice cream, molas
ses, candy, confections, chewing gum
chocolate, cocos, cough drops, malted
milk and similer articles will also be
reduced to a 25 per cent of normal
basis.
The sugar reguations are now so
elaborately and efficiently worked
out that a record is kept of every in
dividual purchases made in the state
of Georgia.
