BIG DECREASE [N
RAIL EARNING
NINGS
THE COST OF OPERATION UN
DER GOVERNMENTY iCONTROL
1S RESPONSIBLE ' FOR THE
SHOWING.
Washington, Jan. 23.—Railroads in
1918 under Government control and
unusual war conditions earned about
FTIROOO,OOO, or £250,000,000 less than
in the record year of 1816, and ahout
the same as in 1915,
This became apparent today on the
basis of definite reports to the In
terstate Commerce Commission of
earnings of 195 principal railroads—
those having anual operating reve
nues ofmore than $1,000,000 for eleven
menths and onofficial calculation ot
December earnings” which railroad ad
ministration reports indicate will be
considerably smaller than those of
the preceding months, Although sub
ject to slight revision, the figures af
forded the first public view of the
results of railway operations last year
s 0 far as earnings are concerned.
Receipts from freight, passenger,
express and other transportation dur
ing the year amounted to approxim
ately $4'873,000.600 or $832,000,000
mere than in the previous year. Ope--
rating expenses jumped to about
52.971,000,000 or about $1,119,000,000
more than in the preceding year,
Preliminary reports to the railroad
administration indicate that freight
traffic fell off in December with the
virtual stopping of great food ship
ments for Kurope and the cessation
of the hauling of other war materials,
while expenses could not be greatly
reduced. This m:mlixinfi sent the net
earnings, or railway operating income
which has been declining steadily
since the record month of last July
to probably $25.000.000 of $30.000.000
officials believe. This may be com
pared to income of 839,204.000 in
