| SOME ADVICE FOR
MAN WITH ORCHARD
Peaches will be gone this month,
The work and results for 1919 will be
complete. But this is the month to
begin on the 1920 crop.
The peach tree borer is the enemy
to go after now. These moths emerge
from the ground during July and Au
gust, anl lays eggs on the tree trunks,
near the surface of the grouud. Now
he moth cannot get out of the ground
if buried more than a couple of in-i
ches. Consequently, if dirt is bunke(l‘
about the base of the trees, mau_\"
moths will never see daylight, and
many an egg will go un-laid. Most of
the moths will be found in a circle
three feet in diameter with the tree
trunk as the center. The bank, 9 to
12 inches high, then actually prevents
some worming.
The eggs hatch soon after beingl
laid, but the young worms are vm‘yi‘
feeble and small. As a rsult, by Nov-i
ember very few have gone under thel
bark. If the mound is removed in
November, the sooner the better, ;md!
the rough bark scraped away, the|
smooth tree painted with ('arbolicl
acid white wash, no further worming
will be needed. This white wash will
also tend to prevent the spread of
wilt and other diseases in working
from tree to tree, and may be a help
in preventing winter killing. A good
many birds knocked with one rock.
Make the carbolic white-wash as
follows:
Slake fresh quick lime in water and

A Real Champion
ENDURANCE and stamina are the two essential
attributes in the field of sport. True champion
ship form is more a matter of backbone than
anything else. It’s the ability to Jast that wins.
Take a look under the hood of a Paige “Larchmont”
and you will see why this car is a real champion of
champions. Sit behind the wheel, throw the gears
into high, step on the accelerator—and watch the
speedometer needle climb up to express train speed.
Then—simply obey that impulse. You will make
no mistake.
