TEACHER OF THRIFT
, WAS THE WORLD WAR
| Atlanta, Ga., July 12.—Senator Ivan
‘E. Allen, State Director of War Sav
ings in Georgia, stmluy gave out an
|inu:rsting statement on war thrift
and sgavings bank deposits,
According to figures taken from a
able issued hy the American In

savings on deposit in the Sum,luzl'm

At the close of the war, in 1918,
the per capits savings had increased
to $26.73, a percentage increase of
44.9 per cent.
“What is true of the Socuthern
States as a whole is relatively true
of the State of (i(:f;l'gifl" says Senator
Allen. These figures are a splendid
tribute to the spirit of sacrifice tthat
imbued the people of our whole coun

better evidence of the genuineness of
its thrift is wanted than is found
in camparing the figures of the h(y‘

» ONDON TAXI DRIVERS
i IN DUTCH WITH PUBLIC
London, May 30. (Correspondence of
{he Associated Press.)—The taxicab
driver is the best-hated man in Lon
don. All through the war he ruled
the taxi-riding public with an iron
hand and his sway, wonig t. the con
tinued shortage of cabs, probably will
’h:wv to be endured for many more

You may ride in a taxicab here only
if the driver finds that your Z-stina

decision will be influenced by his
quick prognosis of the amount of the

you will save time by joining a queue
for a bug or throwing yourself into the
maelstrom of a tube crowd, for it is
certain you won't ride in a taxicab.
Any man bold enough to challeage
the lofty authority of a taxicab driver
wins instant popularity and draws
about him a throng of admirers. So
there were loud cheers and a rusii
for the spot when a passenger the oth

and refused to budge.
“Drive me tc Liverpool street~You

“Can’t 1?2 Get but of my cah,” re
torted the driver.
A peliceman pushed his way through
the crowd, with “What's ali this?”
“He refuszes to get out of my cab.”
“He refuses to drive me,” was the
shouted chorus of driver and fare.
The policeman began to make notes.
Do you wish to prosecute?” he ask
ol the passenger.
“No, 1 want to get to Liverpool
street,” was the mild reply.
“Stick to it!” the spectators urged
the passenger.

Constipation Results When Hot
Weather Stops Exercise
WHEN the system has become accustomed to-a certain daily
routine of exercise and food, health is quick to suffer if that rout
ine is interfered with. The bowels are first to notice the change.
Different water is enough to consti
pate. Changes of food when traveling,
much sitting by those accustomedtolong
walks will do it. Itis especially true that
when elderly people change their routine
they quickly become constipated. Yet
elderly people should be particularly
careful to keep their bowels open, especi
ally during the hot months.
