[ COLUMBUS RAIDERS
C. L. Quartemus and O. L.. Johnson
Held After Capture of $2,000 Worth
’ of Liquor and Much Sugar.
Columbus, July 11.—Wuiskey val-
I ued at $2,000 and six thousand pounds
of granulated brown sugar were found
in two establishments in the city this
‘moming shortly after 8:30 o'clock
when revenue officers swooped down
on the stores of C. L., Quartemus, 52
ight strect, and O. T. Johnson, Fifth
avenue, at Kighth street, and arrest
ed the two proprietors. They were
| later released by United States Com
missioner Brown on making bonds of
$5OO each, pending action of the next
Federal grand jury.
The raids weer made by United
States Revenue Collectors S. J. Caus
ev, E. G. Snglish, R. W. Jackson and
D. W. Dial, the latter two officials
of Newman. The find in liquor and
the sugor, which the officers believo‘
was being held for some moonshiners
to be used in manufacturing ‘‘block
ade” liquor, is one of the largest made
heer in months.
HAUNTS
By C. D. Bercaw
D’you evah have a playmate
‘named George? A boy with red hair?
I ¥now many boys have had such. It
does not matter about George’s other
name, 1 do not remember it. Besides
he was lucky to be called George.
Dope books would cut it down to
“Red”.
One day, says I to George, “grand
ma told me tomatoes was thought to
be pizen when she was a girl”. Our
Deadwood Dick novels always spelled
it pizen and we had to be in correct
form. :
“Zat so?’ says George.” Say, there’s
some moch oranges on the arbor
They say they is pizen; lessee if
they is.”
Ido not believe Huck Finn ever
offered a better proposition than this
plan of eating anything said to be
poison to prove the case. Ii I were
the young parents of a growing boy
1 should watch him day and night
until he got old enough to turn out
to earn a living for himself alone.
George and I lived at a big board
iné house,—some thirty rooms. The
landlord’s seven sons were doctors.
The first floor front of the house
was a drug store. I can remember
this place always. I strayed in there
one day and the drug clerk hollered:
“Skat!” |
That's no way to treat a barefoot
' hoy,—especially if he ‘is the kind who
swells up every time he hears Wil
liam Tell. I have been carrying a
brick for that drug clerk since I cast
my first vote.
There was a cellar to the house.
It was quite dark. George and I were
ever improving our minds, locating
the mysteries of the world, and one
day we took a tour in the cellar. We
felt around in the dark. Finally 1
found something that felt suspieious.
1 dragged it to the opening, calling
George. When we got to the streak
ed light the find happened to be the
greenish molded ribs of a man. When
we were telling it to another chum he
says “d’you all run?”
“Naw, we jest vamoosed.”.
It was my first lesson in day time
“hants’’.
