Among the curiosities of Paris is the market
for cigar stumps in the place Maubcrt. Every
morning from eight to ten o’clock this scene
of business is full of life. A kilogram of
stamps from Londrcs cigars is worth one

centimes, according to the length of the slump.

Nalls are now being driven by machinery
in many box factories. They are fed by
hand into bell-shaped holes, which are ar
ranged in radial lines in a revolving disk,
each line having as many holes as there are
nails wanted along the side of a box. The
disk revolves and delivers the nails into bent
tubes, each nail to a separate tube, whence
the nail is delivered to a pair of nippers, ar
ranged in a row with others. The nippers
then conycy the hail under a stationary ham
mer, when the box is raised upon a eliding
platform till the nails arc pushed into it to a
certain point, at which the nippers relax their
hold and recede, and the box Continues to
rise till the nails, having their heads pressed
constantly by the stationary hammer, arc
fuliy driven in.
