It is evident that the balance of the
Southern States do not propose to be
Mahoneized with the ease that the job
was accomplished in Virginia. The
eyes of the public have been opened
to the enormity of the result, and it
will be no easy matter to hoodwink
another State into the Republican
party.
A petition is before Congress ask
ing that the law now in force in re
gard to imported sugars in warehouses
be changed so that the duties shall be
assessed upon the quantity delivered
from the warehouse, instead of on the
quantity entering the warehouse. This
means that the sugar is doctored after
it gets in the warehouse, so that when
it goes out to the consumers it weighs
almost as much again as was received.
Congress should investigate.
How repudiation is injuring Vir
ginia lias just been illustrated very
practically. The Norfolk Loudmarie
publishes a private letter, recently re
coived by a gentleman of that city,
who had advised a friend living out
side of the State to make a purchase
of land in Virginia. To this letter
was received the following reply:
“ Thanks ; but the location does not
suit. A State that is in such hot vva
ter concerning the payment of honest
debts is not desirable to live in.*’

The members of the Quarterly Con
ference of the Jefferson Circuit are
hereby notified that the time of hold
ing the first quarterly meeting has
been changed by the Presiding Elder
from the 4th Saturday and Sunday in
February to the 3d Saturday and Sun
day in February—just one week soon
er than at first announced. Hear this
in mind, brethren, and let us have a
lab attendance, as this is the most
important quarterly meeting of the

have got too near the end of out life's
journey to stand still or go backward
or even one moment.
Well. Uncle Peter, we are truly glad
to know that you are still with us, and
sorry to see you fall out with your
time honored friend. But don’t Ire so
easily discouraged ; there arc better
times a coming, and you can do more
for yon r adopted country by continuing
your labors with your old party than
you can with the new ” shebang.”
Please don’t delude yourself with the
idea that you will find political rest, or
content in the new departure. The
exj cr.ence of your accumulating years
should teach you that the new
“shebang” just wants office. Now.
you are well off in that respect, and
why not let well enough alone ? Please
do not got too far off from the fold, for
fear that you cannot reach ranks, in
1884, in time to vote for the nominee.
