In Memory of Wm. H. Hill.
We are suddenly and unexpectedly
called upon to give expressions of
grief and mingle our sympathies with
the many friends and relatives of Wm.
Henry 11 11, who was born in Walton
county, Ga., on the 11th day of Aug.,
1854, and died near his birth place
bn the Bth day of February, 1882.
leaving a wife and seven children and
many friends to mourn his loss, who
will all join in this expression : “ A
good man has fallen,” and the loss
that we sustain seems to be irrepara
ble, but we bow submissively to the
will of Him who doeth all things well.
There have been but few men whose
lives have been so active, so straight
forward and so useful, who have made
more friends, and it is certain that no
one ever left fewer enemies. Nor
was his one of those cold, impassive
characters that shed their light with
out heat, but its shining influence fell
with genial warmth within whatever
circle he might move. It is a happy
thing for a community when the life
of a citizen is thrown open to the
world, and no glaring fault nor blot
can be found, as in the life of Wm.
Henry Ilill. There, can be found no
instance of a mean act nor of a depar
ture from a refined and Softy sense () f
honor during his life. llis was an
instance in which worth and greatness
was achieved without tiie aid of those
brilliant qualities the world calls geni
us, hut far better, a sound judgment,
a resolute purpose to pursue the right,
reprove the wrong and to gather wis
dom from experience. The life and
character, and the loss we sustain in
his death, is not only sufficient to ex
cite us to vigilance heretofore unknown
among us. but to put such means in
use as will be efficient in honoring
his name and cherishing his
memory by the next generation
that will rise up in Carter Ilill Lodge
stronger and better men and better
Masons than we have ever been. We
would, if possible, avoid those com
monplace expressions employed on
occasions similar to this. It is not
enough to say that he performed his
duty well as a husband, as a father,: s
a civil officer, as an educator and as a
Mason.- We fondly hoped he would
fill the place of his father, as Master
of our Lodge, to which position lie had
been so recently called by the unani
mous vote of our Lodge. 11 is career
was eminently useful, and there are
few indeed to whom our youth can
better look when seeking models of
imitation and encouragement than to
Wm. Henry Hill. Firm but courteous,
frank and fearless, of high character
and irreproachable morals, lie brought
a vigorous intellect and extensive in
formation to our school room, to the
chair while presiding as a civil officer,
and to the Lodge, and, better than all.
he brought a brother's love.
We can only sa}\ “This was a man,”
but his race is run, his battle is fought,
his victory is won. The places that
knew him will know him no more,
but though dead he still speaketh,
and will speak long after those who
are now taking part in tiiis tribute to
his worth shall have followed him in
the journey, where for a brief space he
lias proceeded us, through the dark
valley of the shadow of death.
He sat as sets the morning star, which goes
Not down behind the darkened west.
Nor hides obscured amidst the tempest of
the sky,
But melts away in the light of Heaven.
Resolved Ist, That our loss, we

Resolved 2nd, That the Christain
Church has lost an active and efficient
member, his wife a devoted husband,
his children a loving and doting father,

Irwinfon Southerner and Appeal:
“On last Sunday, about eight miles
from here, near the waters of Big San
dy. Mr. Sanders, with his children,
were out taking a stroll in the woods.
After wandering around for mimic time,
one of the little girls approached
near tire stream to pluck some honey
suckle blooms which grew on the bank,
and was instantly attacked by a huge
alligator. Mr. S., who was not far
away, ran to the rescue of his child,
and snatched her, as it were, out of
the jaws of death. By this time the
entire little party were in a wild state
of excitement. After Mr. S. had re
moved them from danger, he at once
set to work to slay his ’gatorslrip, in
the accomplishment of which he was
forced to solicit the aid of several of
bis neighbors—in fact, there was a
good s Svi company called out. and.
after a heated contest, the alligator
was forced to hand in his checks. Af
ter he was thought to be goo 1 dead
he was measured and found to he
seven and a half feet long.”
Fort Valley Mirror: “We learned
j'esurday of a wholesale poisoning in
Crawio’-d county, which came near
causing tiic death of Mr. Jordan and
family. It seems t hat William White,
colored, had bound his thirteen y ear
old son to Mr. Jordan for the present
year. The boy grew tired of working
for Mr. Jordan, and decided to poison
the whole family, and thus enable him
self to change his home. Accordingly
he erntied a box of rat poison into the
family coffee-pot, just before the break
fast hour on Tuesday morning last.
Mr. Jordan, wife and children, all
drank of the cotree, and began to grow
sick. Concluding that they had all
been poisoned, emetics wore quickly
administered, and the family soon got,
relief. Mr. Jordan suspected the ne
gro bo} r of the crime, and he was ar
rested and taken before Justice Roland
for trial. He was convicted, and after
the trial aeknoledged having taken
the rat poison from a shelf in the cook
room and emptied it into the codec
pot. He was taken to Knoxville yes
terday and placed in jail.”
Wiregrass Watchman: “As we
go to press we glean the sad news of
the burning to death of an infant son
of Mr. T. W. Browning, of Montgom
ery count}’, on Tuesday of last week,
aged two years, the particulars of
which, in brief, are that during the ab
sence of the mother the child left his
father, who was splitting rails a short
distance from the house, and proceed
ing to the house alone an 1 unobserved
caught fi r e while attempting to remove
some potatoes from tiie burning coab.
The little unfortunate ran toward-* hi

that death ensued in u few hours aTcr

Cures A .lcoholism. Drunkenness and tiie
habit of Opium Eating. These degrading
habits are by far the worst evils that have
ever befallen suffering humanity. Thou
sands die annually from these noxious
drugs. The drunkard drinks liquor not
because lie likes it. but for the pleasure of
drinking and treating his friends, little
thinking that he is on his road to ruin.
Like tiie Opium Eater, lie first uses the
drug in small quantities as a harmless an
tidote. The soothing influence of the drug
takes strong hold upon its victim, leading
him on to bis own destruction. The hab
its of Opium Eating and Liquor Drinking
arc precisely what eating is to alimentive
noss. as over-eating first inflames the
stomach, which redoubles its cravings un
til it paralyzes both the stomach and ap
petite. So every drink of liquor or dose
of opium, instead of satisfying, only adds
to its fierce tiles, until it consumes the
vital force and then itself. Like the glut
tonous tape-worm, it cries •• Give, give,
give !” but never enough until its own ra
pacity devours itself. Samaritan Nervine
gives instant relief in all such cases. It
produces sleep, quiets the nerves, builds
up the nervous sj T steni, an.d restores body
