The Republican Platform.
The following is the text of the
platform as adopted by the conten
tion:
We reaffirm the American doctrine
of protection. We call attention to
its growth abroad. We maintain that
the prosperous condition of our coun
try is largely due to the wise revenue
legislation of the Republican Con
gress. We believe that all articles
that cannot be produced in the United
States, except luxuries, should be ad
mitted free of duty, and that on all
imports comiDg into competition with
products of American labor there
should be levied duties equal to the
difference between wages abroad and
at home. We assert that the prices
of manufactured articles of general
consumption have been reduced under
the operations of the tariff act of 1890.
We denounce the efforts of the Demo
cratic majority of the House of Rep
resentatives to destroy our tariff laws
as manifested by their attacks upon
wool, lead and lead ores, the chief
product of a number of States, and
we ask the people for their judgment
thereon.
We point to the success of the Re
publican policy of reciprocity, under
which our export trade has vastly in
creased and enlarged markets have
been opened for the products of our
farms and workshops. We remind
the people of the bitter opposition of
the Democratic party to this practical
business measure, and claim that, as
executed by the Republican adminis
tration, our present laws will eventu
ally give us control of the ti ade cf the
world.
The American people, from tradi
tion and interest, favor bimettalism, and
the Republican party demands the
use of both gold and silver as stan
dard money, with such restrictions
and under such provisions, to be de
termined by legislation, as will secure
the maintenance of the parity of val
ues of the two metals so that the pur
chasing and debt paying power of a
dollar, whether of silver, gold or
paper, shall be at all times equal.
The interests of the producers of the
country, its farmers and its working
men, demand that every dollar, paper
or coin, issued by the government,
shall be as good as any other.
We commend the wise and patri
otic steps already taken by our gov
ernment to secure an international
conference to adopt such measures as
will insure the parity of value between
gold and silver for use as money
throughout the world.
We demand that every citizen of
the United States shall be allowed to
cast one free and unrestricted ballot
in all public elections, and that such
ballot shall be counted and returned
as cast, that such laws shall be en
acted and enforced as will secure to
every citizen, be he rich or poor, na
tive or foreign born, white or black,
this sovereign right guaranteed by the
constitution. A free and unrestricted
popu’ar bal’ot, jutt and equal repre
f-entation of all people, as well as
their just and equal protection under
the laws, are the foundation of our
Republican institutions and the party
will never relent in its efforts until
tho integrity of the ballot and the
ourity of elections shall be fully guar
anteed and protected in every State
We denounce the continued inhuman
outrages perpetrated upon American
citizens for political reasons in certain
Southern States.
We favor an extension of our for
eign commerce, the restoration of our
mercantile marine by home built ship?
and the creation of a navy for the
protection of our national interests
and the honor of our flag, the main
tenance of most friendly relations
with all foreign powers, entangling
alliance with none, and protection of
the rights of our fishermen.
We reaffirm our approval of the
MoDroe doctrine and believe in the
achievement of the manifest distiny
of the republic in* its broadest sense.
We favor the enactment of more
stringent laws and regulations for the
restriction of criminal, pauper and
contract immigration.
We favor efficient legislation by
Congress to protect the life and limbs
of the employes of transportation
companies engaged in the carrying
on of interstate commerce, and recom
mend legislation by the respective
States that will protect employes
engaged in State commerce, in mining
and manufacturing.
The Republican party has always
been the champion of the oppressed
and recognizes the dignity of man
hood, irrespective of faith, color, or
nationality ; it sympathizes with the
cause of home rule in Ireland, and
protests against the persecution of
the Jews in Russia.
The ultimate reliance of free and
popular government is the intelligence
of the people and the maintenance of
freedom among its men. We there
fore declare anew our devotion to the
liberty of thought and conscience, of
speech and press, and approve all
agencies and which
Tsrms* 81.00 a TxaFi
contribute to the education of the
children of the land; but, while in
sisting upon the fullest measure of
religious liberty, we are opposed to
any union of church and State.
We reaffirm our opposition, de
clared in the Republican platform of
1888, to all combinations of capital,
organized in trusts or otherwise, to con*
trol arbitrarily the condition of trade
among our citizens. "We heartily
endorse the action already taken upon
this subject, and ask for such further
legislation as may be required to rem
edy any defects in the existing lawe,
and to render their enforcement more
complete and effective.
We approve the policy of extending
to towns, villages and rural communi
ties the advantages of the free delivery
service now nejoyed by the larger
cities of the country, and reaffirm the
declaration contained in the Republi
can platform of 1888, pledging a re
duction of letter postage to 1 cent
at the earliest possible moment con
sistent with the maintenance of the
postoffice department and the highest
class of service.
We commend the spirit and evi
dence of reform in civil service and
the wise and consistent enforcement
by the Republican party of laws reg
ulating the same.
The construction of the Nioaragua
canal is of the highest importance to
the American people, as a measure of
national defense and to build up and
maintain an American oommeroe, and
it should be controlled by the United
States government.
We favor the admission of the
remaining territories at the earliest
practicable day, having due regard to
the interests of the people of the ter
ritories and of the United States.
All Federal officers appointed for the
territories should be selected from
bona fide residents thereof, and the
right of self-government should be
accorded as far as practicable.
We favor the cession, subject to
the homestead laws, of arid publio
lands to the States and territories in
which they lie, under such congress
ional restrictions as to disposition,
reclamation and occupancy by settlers
as will secure maximum benefits to
the people.
The World’s Columbian Exposition
is a great National undertaking, and
Congress should promptly enact suoh
reasonable legislation in aid thereof
as will insure the discharging of the
expense and obligations incident
thereto and the attainment of results
commensurate with the dignity and
progress of the nation.
We sympathize with all wise and
legitimate efforts to lessen and prevent
the evils of intemperance and promote
morality.
Ever mindful of the services and
sacrifices of the men who saved the
life of the nation, we pledge anew to
the veteran soldiers of the republic a
watchful care and recognition of their
claims upon a grateful people.
We commend the able, patroitio
and thoroughly American admin
istration of President Harrison.
Under it the country has enjoyed re
markable prosperity, and the dignity
of the nation at home and abroad
have been faithfully maintained, and
we offer the record of pledges kept
as a guarantee of faithful perform
ances in the future.
The Perfection of Lemonade.
Good lemonade is one of the most
perfect drinks ever devised. I can
hardly understand why it is not in
daily use in place of tea or coffee, and
why it does not drive out every kind
of alcoholic drink. Perfect lemonade
is made as follows: For a quart, take
the juice of three lemons, using the
rind of one of them. Carefully peel
the rind very thin, getting just the
yellow outside ; cut this into pieces
and put with the juice and powdered
sugar, of which use two ounces to the
quart, in a jug or jar with a cover.
When the water is just at the boiling
point, pour it over the lemon and
sugar, cover at once and let it get
cold. Try this was once, and see if it
is not delicious. While on the subject,
let me say that I know a physician
whose exclusive drink is lemonade.
He uses about three thousand lem
ons a year. He weighs 185 pounds,
and does not know what it is to be ill.
