Preaching at Bethany next Satur
day and Sunday.
• Cklk and Mifi3 Means
vißitod the Classic City this weok.
Messrs. Shackelford and Scott of
Athens spent Sunday in Jefferson.
Mr. J. M. Merritt and family have
returned to town, and are occupying
the house recently vacated by Mr
W. J. Martin.
The young people were enter
tained very delightfully at the home
of Judge and Mrs. H. W. Bell on
last Thursday evening.
Mrs. J. R. Bullock of Comer is
visiting Mr. J. L. Williamson and
family this week. She was accom
panied by Mr. Clyde Williamson, who
returned to Comer Monday.
Mr. W. R Dodd, who has been a
resident of Winder during the last
year, has returned to Jefferson. He
has rented the Smith place in the
/eastern part of town for another
year.
Mr. James H. Nowell, who was
formerly a citizen of Winder, is now
with J. E. Murphy Cos., Gainesville,
Ga. Mr. Nowell has had several
years experience as a salesman, and
is popular wherever known. He has
many friends in Jackson coanty,
whom he will be delighted to have
call on him at his new place of busi
ness.
Flanigan—Armistead.
The marriage of Mr. J. N. Flani
gan of Gwinnett, and Miss Sara
Armistead of this place, was solemn
ized Wednesday afternoon at five
o’clock at the residence of the bride’s
brother, Col. E. C. Armistead, on
Sycamore St. Only the family and
a few friends of the couple were
present to witness the ceremony.
The bride, who has made her home
for sometime with Col. E. C. Armis
tead, is a lady of fine character, as
well as personal attractions. The
groom resides near Hoschton, in
Gwinnett county, and is one of that
county’s most prosperous planters
and prominent citizens.
Colley—Wills.
On last Tuesday afternoon at three
o’clock, at the residence of the bride
at Wilner, occurred the marriage of
Itev. W. F. Colley of Gainesville, to
Miss Lona Wills. The ceremony was
performed by Rev. Underwood, pre
siding elder of the Gainesville cir
cuit, and Rev. J. W. Stipe of Jeffer
son. The wedding was a quiet af
fair, only the relatives and a few
friends being present. Mr. Harry P.
Bell of Gainesville acted as best man.
Mrs. Colley is a lady who has no
superior in Jackson county. She is
a member of one of the most promi
nent families in the county, and has
all the qualities that are needed to
make a noble wife. Her friends wish
her all the happiness she so richly
deserves.
Rev. Colley is a member of the
North Georgia Conference, and has
been stationed this year in Gaines
ville, having charge also of the
churches at Candler and Pender
grass. He is a man of sterling char
acter, and numbers his friends by his
acquaintances, who congratulate him
on winning such a prize.
WINDER
The first Sabbath in each month, is
the regular appointment for Rev.
James Wood Pogue, the Presbyterian
minister in Winder. The Presbyte
rians of Winder worship in the
Christian church, and the public
are cordially invited to
come and hear Rev. Pogue preach.
On last Sunday, the 6th instant, he
preached two most excellent ser
mons, the morning sermon being
about the rich man and Lazarus, and
the sermon at night being about Job.
The latter sermon was especially
good, showing that God keeps his
children hedged about by a wall, and
that Satan cannot touch them with
out His permission.
On last Saturday night your cor
respondent and Mr. Pogue were in
vited to spend the night at the hos
pitable home of Mr. J. Mercer Jack
son, near Winder, where all the mem
bers of the family vied with each
other to make our visit a pleasant
one, and in this they succeeded to
perfection.
Mrs. John W T . Glenn will reach
Winder the present week, and Prof.
Glenn will arrive a few days later.
Their home will be in that part of
the town situated in Walton county.
The school still increases, the en
rollment.now reaching 132 pupils.
FENDERGEASS.
On the third Saturday evening in
this month at 2 o’clock Miss Octavy
Duke will give the Eastern Star de
gree in the Masonic hall here. All
the ladies of this lodge, Chestnut
Mt., Hoschton, Griffie’s and Jeffer
son, both those who have taken the
degree and those who have not, are
invited. Also, the gentlemen are in
vited to be present.
H. B. Mathis and M. C. McHan
will sing at Holly Springs the third
Sunday at 10 o’clock, and Rev. Merk
will preach there at 11 o’clock.
While in Harmony Grove last week
I was asked by many who would take
charge of the jail next year. For
the satisfaction of them and many
others over the county, we will state
that we are reliably informed that
Mr. H. M. Appleby of Pendergrass
will have charge of the jail next year.
Miss Clyde Wallace of Elberton,
formerly of this place, was here last
week arranging to collect some ac
counts. ,
Albert Teag of Weatherford, Tex*,
who is a subscriber to The Herali*
will be sadly surprised to hear that
his father dropped dead near Coop
er’s mills, in this county, last week.
Your correspondent will be with
the tax collector most all the time
for the purpose of collecting sub
scription to The Herald. Subscrib
ers will please hand us a dollar and
take a receipt for the same.
