large crowd Sunday night, Group 3
being in charge, and rendered an ex
cellent .program. We were indeed
glad to have so many visitors. We
welcome them back again.
Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Parks are hap
py over the arrival of a little boy at
their home February 1.
Miss Annie Brown was % the Sunday
guest of Miss Daisy Griffeth.
Mr. H. W. S. Stringer, who has
been sick for quite a while, is im
proving. We are glad to say and
trust he will soon be restored fully
back to his normal health.
Mr. J. W. Griffeth and daughter,
Miss Daisy, returned home last Fri
day, after spending a week with Mrs.
J. L. Kell of Jefferson.
Mr. and Mrs. Orr of Holly Springs

Mr. Henry Jennings was visiting
relatives and friends of Brockton a
few days last week.
We are glad to say that Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Dowdy’s children are
well ffom the measles.
Mr. Brad Payne and Mr. Radford
Wilks spent one night last week with
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Payne.
We are sorry to say that Mr. and
Mrs. Claude Nash’s family are right
sick with the measles. We hope they
will soon be well.
Mr. Guv Llewallyn was in Jeffer
son one afternoon this week on busi
ness.
Mrs. C. H. Wilks was visiting Mr.
and Mrs. Worth Wilks, Sunday af
ternoon; als, Mr. Ernest Wilks and
family.
Mr. and Mrs. Emory Brooks, also

guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Wilks.
Mr. Gilbert Potts has gone to At
. lanta, to take up his job. We all
are sorry to give him up.
Elberton is literally “founded on a
rock,” hence her name, “The Gran
ite City.” Elberton people say there
is more granite in Elbert county
than can be gotten out by a thousand
men in a thousand years. .
Miss Pauline Marler was a visitor
to Atlanta last week.
Mr. Ralph Ellington spent Sunday
with relatives in Covington-.
Cfol. Egbert Beall spent a part of
last week in Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Helton Whelchel and
little daughter of Atlanta were week
end guests of relatives in Jefferson.

Miss Lorena Segars of Winder
spent the week-end in Jefferson, the
guest of Miss Johnnie Lou Garner.
Misses Minnie Head and Nena Mae
Morrison spent a few days of this

S. C., spent the week-end with rela
tives and friends here.
The Methodist Junior Missionary
Society will meet Friday afternoon
at 3.30 o’clock at the home of Mrs.
J. C. Smith, on Sycamore street.
Misses Miriam Bennett and Louise
Bailey of Monroe spent the week-end
in Jefferson with home folks.

the city Saturday, guests of Mr. and
Mrs. B. W. Hancock.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Epps and
Mrs. Lafayette Mobley were visitors
to Athens, Tuesday afternoon, to see
“Little Old New York.”
Mr. P. A. Daniel, who has’resided
for many yeas on Route 5, has or
dered the address of The Herald
changed to Logansville, Ga.
Miss Irene Moore, Home Economic
Agent of Lumpkin county, was the
week-end guest of Miss Lurline Col

The friends of Mrs. F. A. Rein
hart will regret to know that she has
been seriously ill. However, her.
condition is better, and it is thought
that she will soon be up again.
Mrs. W. J. Hood is with her sister,
Miss Callie Watson, again this week,
at her home on Sycamore street. M:ss
Watson is improving from her recent
illness.
MiS3 Mary Lou Pinson, who is
teaching near Stone Mountain, spent
the week-end with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C. W. Pinson, on Railroad
street.
Misses Ella Dickson and Helen
Wilson of Atlanta spent the week,
end in Jefferson. Mrs. Clifford Sto
rey accompanied them home Sunday
afternoon for a short stay in Atlan
ta.
Miss Lucy May Duke, the younger
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R.
Duke, is taking a business course at
the Athesn Business College. Miss
Duke is a graduate of the 1923 class
of Martin Institute.
Mr. Claud Hancock returned Fri
day from Wesley Memorial Hospital,
where he was operated upon for an
pendicitis. He is re-gaining his
strength rapidly, and will soon be
restored to health. .
Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Anderson
have taken an apartment in the home
of Mr. W. M. McDonad, on Railroad
street. Mr. Anderson is proprietor
of a barber shop next door to The
Herald office.
Miss Mollie Venable spent Sunday
in Gainesville, the guest of her sister,
Mrs. T. N. Suddeth. The many Jack
son county friends of Mr. and Mrs.
Suddeth regret to lose them as citi
zens of this county.
The Womans Auxiliary of the.
Presbyterian church *met on Monday
afternoon, with Mrs. P. Bcrtran as
hostess. Owing to the inclemency
of the weather, only eleven members
were present. After the business
session, the subject of Japan was
studied, after which a delicious salad
course was served by the hostess.
The Thursday Ladies Club was en
tertained very delightfully on Thurs
day afternoon, by Mrs. Dudley
Moore, at her home on Washington
street. Her guests were Mesdames
W. D. Duck, J. H Campbell. A. J.
Flanigan, K. H. Homer
Hancock, Hal Moore. S. J. Nix, Har
old Smith, A. R. Williamson, G. D.

The annual meeting of the Wom
an’s Missionary Society of the North
Georgia Conference will be held in
Griffin, Ga., April 14th to 18th, in
clusive, with the Woman’s Missionary
Society of the First Methodist
church as the hostess auxiliary. The
Gainesville District meeting will be
held at Clarkcsvillc May 13-14, with
Mr3. W. T. Hamby, district secre
tary, presiding.

Mr. J. A. Storey, who has been ill
for several days from an attack of
pneumonia, is reported better.

mence is in the city, the guest of
Mrs. A. J. Flanigan and Mrs. J. C.

Mr. Rob Johnson of White Plains
was in the city the oast week, visiting
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. S. John
son.
Miss Cullie Roberts has been spen
ding several days in Atlanta, where
she is studying the latest styles in
millinery. She will again be with
Miss Minnie Head.
Mrs. Martha Vandiver Stroud, aged
83, passed away at her home in Har
risburg district on Wednesday. The
family have the sympathy of their
many friends in their sorrow.
Mrs. R. C. Carlyle, aged 49, a wid
ow with several children, died at her
home in the Mill Village Monday
monitjg. Her remains were carried
to Chattahoochee church, Hall coun
ty, on Tuesday, for interment.
Joyce, Mabeth and Dickson Sto
rey, children of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford
Stordy, went to Atlanta, Thursdhy,
and returned Saturday. They went
to see Rose’s Royal Midgets.
‘ Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Hancock,
Misses Erma and Grace Hancock,
visited relatives in Maysville, Sun
day, and attended the first quarter
ly conference of the Maysville Meth
odist church.
The Woihans Improvement Club
will hold the regular monthly ’•neet
ing on next Monday afternoon at
3.30 o’clock at the home of Mrs. I.
fayettc Mobley on Hill street. All
members are expected to be present
and new members will be welcomed.
It is a great pleasure to us to
chonicle the great improvement 'in
the condition of the health of Mr.
Wesley Hancock. If this improve
ment continues, he will soon be res
tored to his normal health.

well known resident of Jeffersor
Mr. Bailey resides in Commerce; and
Messrs. Gilmer and Loggins in the
upper part of the county. Mr. Gil
mer’s postoffice being at Gillsville,
and Mr. Loggins at Maysville.
Mr. R. M. Culberson, who had an
nounced for sheriff, withdraws his
announcement; and Mr. F. L. Archer,
who is well known to the people of
the county, announces for sheriff,
Mr. Culberson to be his deputy if
elected.
PRESIDING ELDER W. T. HAMBY
TO BE IN JEFFERSON SUNDAY
Rev. W. T. Hamby, of Gainesville,
presiding elder of the Gainesville
district, will be in the city Sunday,
and hold the first quarterly confer
ence of the Jefferson Methodist
church. He will also occupy the pul
pit at that church at the morning
service, and probably at the evening
service, also. The people of Jeffer
son are given a cordial invitation to
hear Dr. Hamby, who is a pleasing
speaker, and a student of the gos
pel.
