KNOWING HOW MUCH TO BUY
AIDS THRIFTY
How many pounds of sugar, buf
fer, flour, coffeee and other much
used foods does the family require
*\ich week?
How many dozen eggs when eggs
arc plentiful; how few when they
are scarce?
How much of a given kind of meat
to buy for a single dinner, two din
ners or for a dinner and lunch next
day? Ilow many cans of pineapple
will serve? How many breakfast
servings there are in each box of
cereal ?
Definite knowledge on such points
as these together with a good sys
tem of planning meals and buying
for them, will go a long way toward
thrifty management of the food sup
p'y, according to federal economists.
They suggest an inspection of the
preceding month’s food bills to esti
mate how much the food per day
averages, or, in some cases, the food
per person per day. In this way one
can plan for the next week or month
and buy more exactly.
In small families they suggest it
may prove economical to buy per
ishables in day to day amounts, rath
ter than to lose part through spoil
age.; but, as a rule, buying in very
mall quantities is expensive, either
because of the uneven division of the
selling price for halves and quarters
or because the dealer charges a high
er rste.
Time as well as money can be
saved, the economists hold, by shop
ping for staple groceries and canned
goods in dozen or half dozen lots at
intervals of several weeks or more.
Clubbing with neighbors to buy per
ishables at wholesale rates also is
suggested.
FLOOD HAS DETHRONED KING
COTTON IN MISSISSIPPI
A message states that “King Cot
ton,” who for years has reigned su
preme in the Mississippi delta and
the St. Francis basin, has practical
ly been dethroned by the floods.
With approximately four million
acres of the south’s best cotton
land today surging pools of muddy
water from floods and no drainage
possible for perhaps a month, they
will be forced to grow' late corn if
anything this year, the message said.
Growing of cotton requires dry
weather as well as dry earth. After
the floods have receded the ground
xvilf be too wet for two weeks or
more to grow cotton.
It is estimated the loss of the
cotton crop due to floods will run
into millions of dollars.
ADVERTISING
The fact that an advertising: ngan
cy in Atlanta has just passed its
thirty-first anniversary, recalls that
the total amount of national news
paper advertising in the United
States in 1926 is driven as $235,000,-
000, an increase of $15,000,000, or
45.7 per cent over the 1925 year's to
.tal, according: to an estimate in the
annual report of the American News
paper Publishers’ Association.
The figures are convincing, says
the Columbia Record. Business has
found that the right sort of publi
city, i. e., honest facts, is the best
selling agency via the newspaper
route.—Savannah Press.
