HOME ECONOMICS NOTES
A happy bunch of Home Economics
girls left the school cnmpus Friday,
May 7th, for Mr. Ellis White’s, to
have a picnic. As the eleventh
grade girls are leaving this year, and
the eighth grnde girls won in a con
test, the other classes gave a picnic
in honor of them. After all had ar
rived, they were delightfully served
with ice cream cups, which were very
refreshing. They all went into the
beautiful pasture, where games, races
and contests were held. In the
cracker contest, Rose Daniel, a mem
ber of the Senior class, won; while
in the relny race, the eighth grade
won. Then came the best thing of
the afternoon, which was the bounti
ful lunch. This was enjoyed by all,
and when every one went home they
were asking Mrs. Aderhold to give
another picnic.
One of the most lovely social af
fairs of the past week was the
lawn party given by Mrs. M. M.
Bryan, at her home, Hillcrest, in
honor of the Home Economics club.
Delightful refreshments were serv
ed. Assisting Mrs. Bryan in enter
taining were Mrs. Southworth, Mrs.
William Bryan and Miss Frances
Turner. The members of the club
and those present, were: Mesdames
O. C. Aderhold, H. E. Aderhold, A.
J. Flanigan, Misses Cue Moseley,

CAVE SPRING BOY DIES AFTER
BEING STRUCK BY BALL
Rome, Ga., May 17.—Robert Jor
dan, 14-year-old student at Georgia
School for Deaf, at Cave Spring,
died Tuesday morning at a local hos
pital as the result of being struck
in the head by a pitched ball during
a practice game of baseball Monday
afternoon. He sat down on the ground
for a few minutes and apparently re
covered. He re-entered the game and
completed playing his position for
some 30 minutes.
Leaving the playing field with the
others boys, instead of going to the
shower baths, he continued to his
room in the dormitory and lay down,
telling the supervisor that his head
hurt him.
On return from the supper table,
the boy was found unconscious. On
examination no break in the skull
was found, not even a bump on the
side of his head, but he was rushed
to a local hospital. He died without
regaining consciousness.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.
B. F. Jordan, of Arlington.
TEXANS KILL EACH OTHER
IN DISPUTE OVER BIBLE
Texarkana, Tex., May 12.—An
argument over a sentence in the
Bible ended fatally Tuesday night
for Charlie Preston, 05, and George
Shields, brothers-in-law, when they
shot out their differences at the
Shields home at Midway communi
ty, 15 miles southwest of here in
Texas.
After engaging in a fist fight in
the Shields home, Preston obtained
a shot gun and after Shields came
from the house with his, they fired,
almost at the same moment.
Both shots took effect and they I
died a few minutes later.
Shields came out with his gun
and when Preston announced his in
tention of shooting, Shields con
sented, saying “fire ahead,” officers
declared. The two men married twin
sisters. Both are fathers of three
children.
HIGHEST ALTITUDE
EVER REACHED BY
MAN IS ATTAINED
Belleville, 111.—Captain Hawthorne
C. Gray’s balloon ascension at Scott
Field here May 4 to 42,470 feet was
authenticated by the bureau of stand
ards as the highest altitude ever
reached by man, according to noti
fication received today from Wash
ington.
Gray’s record shatters both the
balloon altitude record set in 1901
by two Germans, Suring and Verson,
-and the world airplane top, 39,800
feet reached last year by the French
flier, Calliso.
