The camp for girls at Fowler’s
lake near Athens, which was directed
by Miss Ruth Shelnutt of Winder,
Miss Annie Bob Johnson of Jefferson
and Miss Frances Fowler, recently
ended. Among the activities enjoy
ed by the campers were dancing,
swimming, tennis, hiking, dramatics,
and nature study. Later in the sea
son another term of camp will be
held by the same instructors for girls
of ages from nine through fifteen.

ty will go to New Holland Saturday
to attend the district conference of
the Gainesville district. The Athens-
Elberton district conference will be
held in Danielsville on Friday.
Col. and Mrs. George W. West
moreland and children were at Beth
el Methodist church, in White coun
ty, Sunday, where Col. Westmore
land made an address in the after
noon at the childrens’ day exercises.
On July 6th Col. Westmoreland
will be in attendance at Federal
court; on the 7th he will attend the
district conference of the Methodists
of the Gainesville district at New
Holland; on July 13 he will attend
a dinner to be given in Atlanta by
Mayor James S. Key; and on the
14th will be present in Atlanta at
the session of the Mayors of Geor
gia. On July 21st, he will deliver
a Masonic address at Stephens, Ga.,
Oglethorpe county.

Mrs. Harold Wall and Sara have
returned from a visit of several

Dr. and Mrs. C. B. Barnett and

Miss Lucile Nix, daughter of
Senator and Mrs. J. M. Nix of Com
merce, has resigned her postion as
librarian of the city schools of Win
ston-Salem, N. C., and will become
librarian at Emory University. She
has a degree in Library Science from
Emory University.
Mr. Thomas M. Booth, of Clinton.
South Carolina, is spending a few
days in the county visiting relatives
and friends. He is a native of this
county, and was a pupil of Martin
Institute in the 90’s. In Jackson
county, in Jeffersop and in Martin
Institute he feels a deep and abid
ing interest, and his heart was made
to rejoice in meeting friends and
visiting scenes of “Auld Lang Syne.”
The Ethridge family annual re
union is being held to-day, July 4,
at Midway, near Carl. The speaker
for the occasion is Rev. John H.
Wood. An interesting program for
the afternoon has been arranged,
and dinner will be served on the
ground. This family is one of the
oldest and most distinguished fami
lies in this section of the country,
having been here for about 150
years.
DUKE—HARGROVE
Announcement has been made of
the marriage of Miss Kate Duke and
Mr. Alec Guill Hargrove, Jr. The
ceremony was performed in Law
renceville Sunday, July 1, by Rev. E.
B. Collins, pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Lawrenceville. Follow
ing the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Har
grove left by motor for a honeymoon
trip to Ashville, N. C., and through
the beautiful Shenandoah - Valley.
On their return, they will reside in
Young Harris.
Mrs. Hargrove’s wedding gown was
a navy blue ensemble, with acces
sories to match. She wore a should
er corsage of sweet heart roses and
valley lilies.
The bride is the only daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Duke
of Pendergrass. She is the grand
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Harvey Duke. Or. both her matern
al and paternal sides, she is a repre
sentative of prominent, pioneer
Jackson county families. She was
educated in the Pendergrass High
School, at Young Harris Junior Col
lege, and at the State University.
Since graduation, she has taught in
the High School department of Mar
tin Institute, Jefferson, Ga., where
she was deservedly popular. Her
only brother is John Welch Duke, a
1934 graduate of Martin Institute.
Mr. Hargrove is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. A. G. Hargrove, Sr., of
Athens. He is a graduate of the
State University, holding a diploma
in civil engineering from that insti
tution. He is a member of the Pi
Kappa Alpha fraternity. At pres
ent he holds a position as engineer
in a CCC camp in North Georgia.

that Mrs. Hargrove’s marriage re
moves her from the teaching force

HOME CEREMONY
Marked with beauty and simplici
ty was the wedding of Miss Mary
Ruth Wills and Mr. Willie J. Culber
son, which took place at 4:30 p. m.
Saturday at the home of the bride’s
mother, Mrs. J. A. W’ills, on Law
renceville street. Rev. Nat G.
Long, brother-in-law of the bride,
performed the ceremony, in the
presence of only the members of the
immediate families.
The bride, who was unattended,
had chosen for her wedding dress sf
beautiful afternoon gown of deep
rose crepe, made close fitting and
reaching to the floor. With this she
wore rose pumps. Completing her
costume was a shoulder bouquet of
talisman roses and lilies of the val
ley. The attractive costume was
most becoming to the fair, blonde
beauty of the bride.
The young couple stood before an
improvised altar of flowers, and
the entire lower floor of the spaci
ous Wills home was decorated in
rose pink blossoms, with handsome
ferns and other growing plants for
a back ground. In the dining room,
the table was covered with a hand
some lace cloth, and a bowl of rose
pink flowers formed the center
piece.
Following the ceremony, from 5
to 6:30 o’clock, Mrs. Nat G. Long
and Miss Sarah Wills, only sisters of
the bride, entertained at a lovely re
ception, inviting the ladies of the
city, who called to extend best wish
es and to bid farewell to one who
had been reared here and who, by
her sweet, gentle, womanly nature,
had endeared herself to everybody.
The guests were received at the
door by Miss Wills and presented to
the receiving line comprised of Mrs.
Long, Mrs. Culberson, the bride,
Mrs. R. M. Culberson and Mrs. J. A.
Wills. Miss Wills wore white crepe;
Mrs. Long, pink lace; Mrs. R. M. Cul
berson, white crepe; and Mrs. Wills,
brown chiffon.
In the dining room, where re
reshments were served, those assist
ing were Misses Sophie Swain, Leila
Bates, Lucile Jarrett, Mesdames J.
C. Turner, H. E. Aderhold, M. M.
Bryan, H. J. W. Kizer, J. E. Wills.
The guests were then invited to
view the lovely trousseau of the
bride and the many presents given
the young couple.
The bride’s book was kept by
Miss Blanche Jarrett.
At 7 o’clock Mr. and Mrs. Culber
son left for a wedding trip to points
of interest in the North Carolina
Mountains. Her going-away dress
was beige crepe, with accessories of
brown. On their return they will
be at home in Lyons, Ga.
Mrs. Culberson is the second
daughter of Mrs. Clara McDonald
Wills and the late Judge J. A. Wills.
She is a graduate of Martin Institute
and of the Georgia College fv Wo
men. Since leaving college she has
taught most successfully in Martin
Institute. She is an accomplished
musician, and for several years was
pianist at the Jefferson Methodist
church. During her entire young
ladyhood, she has been a leader in
social, church and educational work.
She will be greatly missed in Jeffer
son, where she always gave her pres
ence and services to everything that
was worth while.
Mr. Culberson i3 the son of Sheriff
R. M. Culberson and the late Mrs.
Susie Johnson Culberson. He is a
graduate of Martin Institute and of
the State University, and is one of
Jefferson’s most excellent young
men. He is now instructor of voca
tional agriculture in the school at
Lyons.

Announcement has been made of
the marriage of Mr. J. B. Loggins
and Mrs. Dovie Bronson, which oc
curred in Gainesville recently. Mr.
Loggins formerly lived in Jackson
county, having served as tax col
lector of the comity, but has recent
ly made his home in Gainesville.
Mrs. Bronson formerly lived in
Gwinnett county, but has been re
siding in Gainesville for some time.
