Mrs. C. E. Pittman of Commerce
was in the city Monday. Mrs. Pitt
man has been gathering data for
several months on the Jackson coun
ty history. She will begin at an
early date to compile these facts and
complete the history.
MRS. MURPHY ENTERTAINS
MISS MOBLEY
A lovely affair, honoring Miss
Martha Mobley, a popular bride
elect, whose marriage to Mr. Nat
Hancock will occur the latter part
of the week, was the party given by
Mrs. Peggy Murphy Friday evening
at her home in Talmo. For several
months, Miss Mobley has been an
employee under Mrs. Murphy, who
is at the head of the Jackson County
FERA, and the guest list included
those connected with this office,
their husbands and wives.
Mrs. Murphy’s home was made
most attractive with flowers and
growing plants, and the party was
one of the most enjoyable of the sea
son. The honor guest was present
ed with an electric perculator and
waffle iron.

Jones, Mrs. Quill Hargrove, Mrs. H.

SHOWER FOR BRIDE-ELECT
Miss Martha Mobley, a charming
bride-elect of the month, was the in
spiration of' a beautifully planned
“Shower” given Saturday after
noon at the Log Cabin by Misses
Beth Bailey and Rose Daniel. The
large reception room of the Cabin
presented a cheerful scene with its
decorations of flowers, and the burn
ing logs that filled the wide, open
fireplace spread a warmth and cheer
throughout the building that was
surpassed only by the cordial and
affable greeting extended by the
lovely hostesses and their honor
guest, who is soon to become a bride
and make her home in another city.
The guests invited for the bridge
games arrived at 3:30, and until five
were entertained with this fascinat
ing game. At five o’clock other
guests came, and immediately inter
est was centered in the arrival
of two appropriately dressed “bell
hops” in the person of Misses Fran
ces Smith and Marjorie Sue Holder,
carrying a half dozen large traveling
bags, which they delivered to the
bride-elect. On opening the same,
there was displayed an array of use
ful and beautiful gifts, expressions
of the love and esteem in which Miss
Mobley is held.
The hostesses served tea and sand
wiches, and the guests voted the af
fair one of the loveliest of the sea
son.
MRS BOLAND HONORED AT
BRIDGE PARTY
Mrs. J. D. Escoe entertained at a
bridge party, honoring Mrs. S. A.
Boland, who left last week to make
her future home in Loganville.
A number of games were enjoy
ed, with high score prize being won
by Mrs. C. D. Cox. The honoree
was also presented with a dam y
gift. Each guest was astffed to write
a wish for Mrs. Boland.
After the game the hostess served
a course of delicious fruit..

birthday party Saturday evening at
her home on Jackson St. Games
were played throughout the evening,
which were greatly enjoyed.
A special feature of the evening
was the beautiful birthday cake
which was placed in the center of
the table. Upon it was placed five
tiney white candles. Ice cream, can
dy, apples, cake, and bananas were
served.
Everybody reported having a good
time and wished Miss Betty had a
birthday more often. Each little
guest carried a gift. Those present

A charming social affair of last
week was the bridge paVty given by
Mrs. Carl H. Legg at her attractive
home on Lawrenoeville street. The
living room where tables were placed
for bridge, with its attractive furn
ishings, was made more alluring with
bowls of golden snapdragon.

luncheon, honoring Mrs. J. W. Ghol
ston of Comer, and Mrs. H. B. Rich
ey of Athens.
The polished table, with its lace
covering, was centered with a silver
bowl filled with pink roses and
dainty clusters of white narcissus.
On each side were silver candle
sticks, holding pink unshaded tapers.
A delicious lunch was beautifully
served.

CHAPTER B—‘THE CANYON OF
CALAMITY”
“The Mystery Squadron” is now
in its eighth episode at the Roosevelt
Theatre. This chapter is titled “The
Canyon of Calamity,” and shows
Fred, who has been captured by the
Black Ace and his men, taken into
the mine, while Bracken is sent out
to rescue the other mystery flyer
from Bill. Bill escapes from Brack
en by a ruse.
At the hidden mine, the voice of
the Black Ace comes over the radio,
telling Collins that Cook, Davis and
Gray are headed toward the mine
and for Collins to take care of them.
But Fred outwits them and escapes
from the mine in an automobile.
As Barlow’s men are waiting for
Bill, Fred’s car comes tearing in
from the opposite direction. Bar
low and his men open fire, punctur
ing one of the tires and Fred’s car
goes over the embankment.
COLORED WOMAN DIES FROM
WOUND
Following a week of serious ill
ness caused by a wound inflicted
with a rock thrown, it is claimed, by
Man Ivy, colored, Beulah Phillips,
a daughter of Rose Phillips, colored,
passed away at her home on ‘‘Rat
Row” Sunday. The fracas took
place on the previous Sunday.
Man Ivy, the accused, left soon
after the chsturbance, and has not
yet been arrested. A warrant, ac
cusing him of murder, has been is
sued, and no doubt he will soon be
behind'the bars of the Jackson coun
ty jail.
