Use Your Beans
to Vary Them
HAVE you ever realized the
number of different kinds of
beans you can get in a can?
Baked beans, Kosher beans, lima
beans, beans with pork, red kidney
beans, stringless beans and beans
with tomato sauce all come to you
in this convenient form. Of course
you can make a great variety of
dishes with all these different
kinds of beans, but the ones most
difficult to vary are the baked
beans. These make a fine dish
just as they come from the can,
but have you ever tasted
Curried Halted Beans: Fry one
fourth pound bacon, and remove
to dish to keep hot. Add two
Bhrcdded green peppers to fat, and
sautd until golden brown. Add
two No. 2 cans baked beans,
two cups tomatoes, one-fourth tea
spoon pepper and one teaspoon
curry powder, and simmer from
fifteen to twenty minutes or until
slightly thickened. Serve gar
nished with the bacon slices and
whole sweet gherkins. Serveß
eight.
Another Foreign Tang
If you don’t particularly like
curry, but do pine for a sharp
taste in your beans, here is an
other recipe with a foreign tang:
Mexican Baked Beans: Fry six
teen rashers bacon, and remove to
platter to keep hot. Pour off all
but about six tablespoons fat. Add
two diced onions, aud sautd till
golden brown. Add the contents
of two No. 2 cans baked beans and
two teaspoons chili powder, and
heat thoroughly. Add salt, if de-
Bired, to taste. Serve bacon on
top. Serves eight.
And fine for picnics are
Baked Bean Sandwiches: Mash
one-half cup cold canned beans,
add two tablespoons chili sauce,
one tablespoon chopped capers,
two tablespoons chopped dill
pickles, salt and paprika, and
spread between buttered slices of
brown bread.*

A STALWART HEART
(By Ted Olson)
Give me always a goal to try for,
Let me fight till my breath is spent;
Give me a dream to live and die for,
And I* shall be content.
Keep for others your silent leisure,
Drowsy days in the shade or sun,
I was never one to treasure
Rest till my work was done.
No, for sloth is the worst of sinning,
Give me the joy and zest of the
, fray;
Finding my true reward in the win
ning,
Not in the prize or pay.
And, if victory be denied me,
I shall not shrink from another test,
Nor care at all if the fools deride
me,
Knowing I did my best.
THANKFULNESS
(By Grenville Kleiser)
I’m thankful for the dawn of day,
For useful work and bouyant play;
I’m thankful for the faith of friends,
For humble heart that condescends.
I’m thankful for the trees and flow
ers,
For sapphire seas and cooling show
ers;
I’m thankful for the world of books,
For chanting birds and purling
brooks.
I’m thankful for the sun at noon,
For silent stars and crescent moon;
I’m thankful for the gift of prayer,
For blessings I can freely share.
I’m thankful for the right to live,
For daily chance to serve and give;
I’m thankful most to God above
For His protecting, perfect love.

VEGETABLES AND FRUITS ARE
AN AID TO GOOD HEALTH
Many different kinds of vegetables
can be grown in the south, thus af
fording a wide range of healthful,
nutritious fresh vegetables in season,
and in addition many vegetables to
be canned, dried, pickled, or stored
and kept in a fresh condition for
winter use, says W. C. Pelton, Uni
versity of Tennessee extension horti
culturist.
The importance of an abundance
of fruit and vegetables in the diet
for the sake of good health should
not be overlooked, he states.
With a well selected variety of
fruits and vegetables produced in a
well planned garden, the family will
use more than if vegetables have to
be purchased, and better balanced
meals are possible. Such vegetables
as spinach, cabbage, carrots, lettuce,
tomatoes, asparagus, turnips, col
lards, and chard are especially high
in the essential vitamins. Vegetables
are also a good source of such miner
als as calcium, phosphorus, and iron
which are essential elements in the
human body.
“Furthermore, a certain quantity
of bulk food is necessary for good
health, and vegetables are the main
source of ‘roughage.’ Because of
their succulence and relatively large
bulk the leafy vegetables and most
of the root crops probably aid in the
digestion of the more concentrated
foods.”
THE CODE IS OUT
The decision of the Supreme court
of last Monday settled all the code
problems that have, in one way or
another, been a subject of contro
versy.
The codes are out, but we trust
the effect so far as it applies to bet
ter prices and fairer competitive
conditions between printers are con
cerned will continue.
A strict enforcement of the print
ing code as it applied especially to
the smaller shops was found impossi
ble, but the efforts in that direction
did make for better conditions in
the printing business, and these bet
ter conditions should continue.
The National Code Authority of
A-2 and A-5 of the Graphic Arts
industries made a valiant effort to
make the code as it applied to the
smaller printing plants a means of
betterment for these plants, and they
succeeded to a far greater degree
than has been generally credited.
Through these efforts many compet
ing printers have been shown the
fallacy of price-cutting and unfair
practice tactics; they have been
shown the opportunities for better
business offered by legitimate and
fair competition. In thousands of
cases these lessons will not be quick
ly forgotten.—Publisher’s Auxiliary.

TOMATO plant crop
WORTH $600,000 TO
GROWERS IN GEORGIA
The 1935 crop of tomato plants
grown in Georgia is worth $600,000
to the growers, Manning S. Yeomans,
state entomologist, said Friday.
“And the industry is practically in
its infancy,” he said.
Mr. Yeomans made the estimate in
pointing out a statement made by
Dr. C. M. Haenseler, associate plant
pathologist of the New Jersey Agri
cultural Experiment Station, that
New Jersey growers should “experi
ence little trouble from diseased
plants if Georgia-certified stock is
used.”
Six thousand acres in south Geor
gia are devoted to tomato plant pro
duction, and 5,000 acres have been
entered for state certification. Mil
lions of plants are produced annual
ly-
The acreage jumped from 2,500 to
6,000 in one year, Yeomans said.
