Mr. and Mrs. Morris Bryan were
called to Royston last week, on ac
count of the illness of Morris, Jr.,
who had an attack of appendicitis
and underwent an operation at the
Brown hospital in that city. His
friends will rejoice to know that he
is convalescing very satisfactorily.
Morris has been connected with the
Royston Cotton Mills during the
school vacation season.

Colonel W. D. Holliday, Jr., who
spent few days in Jefferson visiting
his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs.
W. D. Holliday, Sr., has returned to
his home in Zanesville, Ohio. His
Jackson county friends are very
much gratified with the good record
made and success achieved in his
adopted city and state. He was ac
companied home by his wife and
baby and Miss Hazel Brooks, who
had been here and in Pendergrass
visiting for several days.

It was a source of pleasure not
only to his family, but his numerous
friends to see the pleasant and fami
liar face of Bass Garrison in the
city this week. For nine years he
has not been back for a visit to his
old home, but came three thousand
miles to be present at the birthday
celebration of his father, Mr. Thom
as W. Garrison, who, last Sunday
celebrated his 92nd anniversary,
fa his adopted State of California,
he has made many warm friends,

friends Sunday. Dr. Epps was call
ed to Atlanta on account of the ill
ness of his father, W. H. Epps, who
is in a hospital in that city, suffer

last week, guests at the home of
Mrs. J. A. Wills. Mrs. Chafin was
formerly Miss Sarah Whitaker, and
held the position of home demon
stration agent for Jackson county.

begin his duties as member of the
school faculty and athletic coach in
the school at Fayetteville. He was

leave Thursday for Baltimore to re
sume her duties as choir director in
one of the Presbyterian churches of
that city. She will make the trip by

have been in Asheville, N. C., are
spending a few days at the Harrison
Hotel before going to Miami, Fla.,
where they make their home. Mrs.

taught music in Martin Institute.

James Wills, who has been at Mt.
Berry schools during the summer, is
spending a few days of vacation at
his home here, before returning to
enter the college department of Ber
ry. During the summer he had a
number of splendid trips to some of
the large Mid-Western cities in con
nection with his duties at the school.
Mr. and Mrs. Willie J. Culberson,
after a visit to relatives here, re
turned to their home in Lyons, and
were greeted with the announce
ment that Mrs. Culberson had been
elected a member of the Lyons
school faculty. Before marriage,
she taught in Martin Institute, and
was regarded as a teacher of splen
did qualifications. Lyons is to be
congratulated on securing the ser
vices of such an experienced teach
er.

A. B. King, master mechanic for
the Ralph E. Mills Cos., had the mis
fortune to be hit in the eye by a
piece of steel, and for several days
has been under the care of a
specialist in Atlanta. Mrs. King and
daughter, Dorothy, are with him in
Atlanta. Since coming to Jefferson,
Mr. and Mrs. King have resided in
the home of C. N. Pinson.

IN PRIZE FIGPOTNG ROLES
“Kid Galahad,” a prize ring dra
ma, comes to the Roosevelt Theater
Thursday and Friday, with Wayne
Morris, a 190-pound kid, to play the
title role.
In days gone by, almost anybody
was chosen to portray heavy weight
prize fighters, but no more weakling
actors are now used in fighting
roles. Wayne Morris, the star in
“Kid Galahad,” could hold his own
with any professional pugilist.
If you enjoy a good picture and
a fighter who knows his job, don’t
fail to see “Kid Galahad.”

COMMERCE BRIDE-ELECT
HONORED
Commerce, Ga.—Mrs. Clarenc*
Chandler of Commerce entertained
recently at a miscellaneous shower
at her home, complimenting Mias
Mildred Short, whose marriage to
LaCerne Knight of Cornelia takes
place in September.
The color motif, pink and white,
was effectively carried out in decor
ations of mid-summer flowers.
From the arch between the living
and dining room a cluster of silver
bells was suspended, with soft dra
peries of pink caught at either side
of the door-way. In the dining room
the chandelier was draped in white,
with silver flowers. The windows
were curtained in pink, held back
with miniature wedding bells. On a
table at the bride’s chair was a
miniature bride and groom.
As the guests assembled), Miss
Janet Short rendered two vocal se
lections. A contest, “The Bride
Packs Her Suitcase,” was enjoyed.
Miss Ruth Moss won the prize, a
finger tip towel, which she present
ed to the honored
Miss Frances Hubbard came in,
dressed as a fairy, and made a short
speech, asking the bride-elect to
close her eyes. She waved her wand,
and immediately there appeared be
fore her a pink treasure chest trim
med, in silver. It contained many
beautiful and useful gifts.
After the gifts were displayed, the
guests were invited into the yard,
where, under a pergola near the lily
pool the punch bowl had been placed.
Punch and cookies were served by
Misses Ruth Moss, Janet Short,
Mary Whelchel and Ruth Short.
Mrs. Oscar Williford and Mrs. N. T.
McElroy also assisted in entertain
ing the forty or more guests.

Dr. H. W. Birdsong, well known
physician of Athens, was guest
speaker at the monthly session of
the Jackson-Barrow Medical Associ
ation held Monday evening the
Harrison Hotel. Dr. Birdsong illus
trated his lecture with pictures pro
jected by a movie machine.
The physicians present to enjoy
the address and the dinner that pre
ceded the meeting, were L. Sanders
and A. A. Rogers, Commerce; L. C.
Allen, Hoschton; W. T. Randolph,
W. L. Mathews and Alex Russell,

NEW RESIDENCE BEING ERECT
ED ON SYCAMORE STREET
Herndon & Smith, Elberton con
tractors, have contracted to erect for
Edgar Hammonds of that city a
seven-room brick residence in Jeffer
son on a lot adjoining the residence
lot of H. T. Mobley on Sycamore
street. The contractors are already
on the job, which will consist of aa
expenditure of about $5,500. When
completed, the home will be occu
pied by Mrs. Hammond’s mother,
sister and brother, Mrs. T. H. Black
stock, Mrs. Susie Baird and Hubert
Blackstock.

the court house Sunday afternoon at
3 p. m. Bishop W. A. Fountain, an
outstanding minister, will speak to
