BOYS GAVE UP GAMBLING
Finding that some of the boys at
Proctor Academy were playing the
slot machines, the headmaster, Dr.
J. Halsey Gulick, went to police
headquarters, secured a confiscated
machine and set it up in the mathe
matics room. He then had the
mathematics instructor work up a
problem involving the law of mathe
matical probability to be solved by
playing the machine with “phoney”
money.
The boys learned that a player
hits the jack pot once in 4,000 times
—at a nickel a throw, that meant it
would cost about S2OO to win $5.
They learned also that the next high
est pay-off was once in 2,000 plays
—it cost SIOO to win sl.
The boys soon gave up gambling.
