for Daytona Beach, Fla., where they
will spend three weeks, during which
time Mr. Cheatham will take a speci
al course in directing Manual Arts
training, which will be an elective
course in the local schools beginning

Georgia Women’s Short Course
will be held in connection with Farm
and Home at the University
of Georgia August 7-12. Approxi
mately 600 Georgia rural women
are expected to attend, and an at
tractive program has been arranged
for their instruction and entertain
ment. They will be housed in the
University dormitories. The State
4-H Club Councils will also be held
during the same date.

Mrs. June H. Langford and
daughter, Miss Jeannette Langford,
of Watkinsville, visited the former’s
sisters, Mrs. F. G. Camp and Mrs.
Ola Whitehead, near Good Hope, last
week. Miss Langford has been
teaching in Maysville high school for
the past three years, where she will
take up her work again about Sep
tember first. Miss Langford is plan
ning a trip to the World’s Fair dur

a native of Jackson county, who has
been residing in Morgan county for
several years, was a visitor in Jeffer
son Tuesday, and added his name to
our subscription list.

The rains of the past few days
have had a very fine effect on all
growing crops, but especially corn
planted during the month of May.
Before the advent of the rains, the
dry, hot weather was having a very
deleterious effect on these late corn
crops.

President John C. Turner and
Secretary George W. Westmoreland
of Jefferson Rotary went to Dublin
Sunday, where they attended the
annual assembly of Georgia Rotary.
These officers report a pleasant time
in this South Georgia city.

Professor Herbert E. Woodruff, a
teacher in the school for the deaf
and dumb at Cave Springs, was a
visitor here this week. He was
making a research of the early
establishment in Georgia of edu
cation for those deprived of hear
ing and speech.

Prof, and Mrs. Garland Bryant of
Baldwin, Miss Clara Adams of
Hoschton, and J. F. Eckles of Jeffer
son, have returned from a trip to
the World’s Fair in New York. Go
ing up they went through the beau
tiful Shenandoah Valley, and were
in Washington to see the sights
there, returing by Philadelphia,
Richmond and Raleigh.
Revival services will be held in the
Jefferson Methodist Church during
the early part of September. Fortu
nate, indeed, is the church in secur
ing Rev. Claud Hendrick, the Dis
trict Superintendent of the Gaines
ville District, to do the preaching
He is one of the most earnest and ef
fective gospel messengers in the
North Georgia Conference. Also,
he has a magnetic personality, and
is admired by all with whom he
comes in contact.

Union services each Sunday even
ing by the Presbyterian, Baptist,
Christian and MethodLst Churches of
Jefferson are attracting good size
crowds, and are enjoyed very much
by all who attend. The sermons of
the pastors of these churches at these
services cannot fail to impress all
who hear them with their deep con
cern for the salvation of the souls
of people. Next Sunday night in
the Presbyterian Church there will
be only song service.

lighted that he is able to return
home from the hospital, where he
underwent a serious operation, and
is recuperating very rapidly at his
home on Lee street.

her home at Red Stone, after spend
ing two months in the mountains at
East La Porte, N* C., with her son,
Lafayette Waters, and family. While
returning on her way home she was

city Tuesday, en route to Young
Harris to attend the college student

IN MARRIAGE
Edwin L. Kelly, who packed his
grip and headed his automobile on
Monday, July 24, for a trip to Cali
fornia, drove by Blakeley, where he
and Miss Margaret Kelly were unit
ed in marriage, and together they
left on a bridal trip to the far-away
Western State and the Golden Gate
World Fair. They carry with them
the best wishes of a large circle of
friends, who will welcome their re
turn.
Miss Kelly spent last school year
in Jefferson teaching the seventh
grade. By her graciousness, her
genial disposition and her efficiency
in the school room she won a host of
friends, who will be delighted to
know that she is to make Jefferson
her permanent home.
No young man in Jeffgrson has
more friends or is held in higher
esteem than Ed Kelly. He is the
older son of Mrs. Sam Kelly and
the late Mr. Kelly. His grandpar
ents, the late Rev. A. J. and Mrs.
Sallie Randolph Kelly and R. J. and
Mrs. Sarah Pendergrass Hancock,
were leaders in the pioneer settlers
of Jackson county. Ed is promi
nently established in business in
Jefferson, and he and his bride will
be among the prominent young mar
ried couples in Jefferson.

was entertained on last Tuesday
evening at a lovely dining at the
home of Mrs. H. D. Arthur at her
home near Jefferson.

HOSCHTON CITIZEN LOSES
BROTHER
Carl H. Fagan, aged 44, of Win
der, died July 29, in an Athens hos
pital. He is survived by his wife;
four children, Hazel, Sue, Billy and
Bennie, of Winder; nine brothers,
Henry Fagan, of Hoschton; Gee,
Walter and Jet, of Winder; Frank
and Mat, Lawrenceville; Luke, Social
Circle. Services were held at First
Baptist church, Winder, Ga., Sunday
afternoon, Rev. E. H. Collins and
Itev. E. E. Steel officiating. Ameri
can Legion and Masons had charge
at the grave.
OLD AGE PENSION CLUB
The Old Age Pension Club will
meet at the court house in Jefferson,
Saturday August 19. Ladies and
men are invited to come and bring
lunch. Also, we will welcome pen
sioners from the adjoining counties,
and the County Welfare Board. Dr.
L. C. Allen and others will be in
vited to speak to the pensioners.
Don’t forget the date, August 19,
and bring your lunch and enjoy the
day together.
