recent cold snap may cause a poor
stand.
About 90 per cent of the peach
crop was killed by the cold, but the
apple, pear and some other fruits
are not yet in bloom, which we hope
are safe
We trust that all come to Sunday
achool next Sunday, as we must elect
tome teachers and complete our
school for this year.
It was decided on Sunday to have
a singing here next second Sunday
in May in the afternoon. As it is
Mother’s Day we will, as usual, have
our regular preaching service and

Mr. Joe Wood Panel
On Wednesday evening, April 10,
about 9 o’clock, the death angel en
tered the Wood home and took from
this world of pain and sorrow their
father, Mr. Joe Wood, who was
eifrhty-five years of age. Mr. Wood
was one of the oldest citizens of this
community, and was loved and res
pected by all who knew him. He
Was born in North Carolina, but
lived most of his life in Georgia. He
was married to a Miss Eller, and to
this union was born eight children.
His wife and five children preceded
him to the grave. The three sur
viving children are: Mrs. Jack Hol
den, Misses Rebecca and Ollie Mae
Wood. He is also survived by thir
ty-four grand children, and forty
three great grand children. Funeral
services were held at Ila Baptist
church.

who calls a woman over the tele
phone and uses obscene and vulgar
language in speaking to her is guil
ty of using such language in her
presence, according to a ruling of
the Georgia Court of Appeals. The
defendant in the case reviewed by
the higher court received a year’s
sentence for the offense.

Mexico, was visiting here the past
week, the guest of his brother, T.
W. Phillips. It has been quite a
number of years since these broth
ers have had the pleasure of seeing
each other and the union was a hap
py one.
Mrs. Lillian Bradley Passes
Mrs. Lillian Bradley, 46, of Port
erdale, passed away quietly, April
9 at the home of her sister, Mrs. E.
G. Loggins, where she had been
tenderly nursed for the past month.
She leaves one daughter, Miss Es
telle Bradley, together with a num
ber of other relatives and friends,
to mourn her passing. Funeral ser
vices were conducted from the Cab
in Creek Baptist Church, Wednesday
afternoon by Rev. A. 0. Hood of
Jefferson and interment made in the
church cemetery. Friends extend
deepest sympathy to the bereaved.
School News
We are pleased to make the an
nouncement that Dr. M. D. Collins,
state school superintendent, Atlanta,
will preach the Commercement ser
mon at Benton High School, Sunday
morning, May 19, at 11 o’clock.
The literary address will be made
Monday evening at 8:30 o’clock by
Hon. H. G. Jarrard, state school
supervisor, Atlanta. All churches,
locally, are asked to suspend Sun
day morning services in order to at
tend the Commercement in a body.
Other leading features of this oc
casion will be announced at an
early date.
Parent-Teachers Night was ob
served in the auditorium of the
Benton High School Wednesday
evening, April 10, under the auspi
ces of Prof. Frank Cain. Forty
three patrons and teacheis were
present for the initial meeting,
which proved to be an interesting
event from the beginning. Various
games and social chats afforded en
tertainment for all present. These
meetings are 4destined to bring the
parents and teachers in closer con
tact, thereby increasing the interest
in the school work at this place.
The Senior Class of Benton
High presented the play, “Light-
House Nan,’’ at Sanford, Friday
evening of last week, where they
were cordially received and the re
sults of the presentation were very
satisfactory to the participants.
A double-header debate will be
staged in the auditorium of the
school building Thursday evening,
April 18, by the Junior Class. The
debates will start promptly at 8:15
o’clock, coached by Miss Florine
Maddox. Subject, “Resolved, that
the Government Should Cease to
Use Public Funds (including Cred

Miss Frances Griffith of Toccoa
Falls Institute won a gold pin re
cently for the highest record ever
attained by a freshman in short
hand. This community would like
to extend congratulations to Fran
ces for this honorable record.
John Beatty, Jr., who is a student
of Toccoa Falls Institute, was on
honor roll for past six weeks. We
are very glad he is making such a
splendid record.
