Preparations have been made to
grade and soil the road leading from
Academy church to the highway at
the Holder place. Work will be re
sumed in a few days. It is greatly
needed and will be greatly apprecia
ted.

able to be out again, after suffering
for quite a while with colds.
Arthur Hardman, one of the old
est colored men about here, had a
partial stroke several weeks ago and
is still in bad shape, not able to be
up or do anything.
Mr. and Mrs. Zenus Wood are
now at home to their friends at their
home on Foster Eckles farm.
Many mattresses have been placed
in our community lately. The writer
began to help make one recently
and the second stick with the sharp
needle went into a finger, so he could
not sew for blood, so he was sent to
the batting room, or whatever you
call it, to weigh cotton and he sure
was glad of the swap.
Many tons of nitrate of soda were
put on the small grain crop about
here last week. Several pastures
have been plowed and fertilized, pre
paratory for the grasses to be sown
a little later. If you want to see a
green pasture now just drive over
to Hubert Wilhite’s or just look from
the Highway.

A. was held Thursday afternoon in
the auditorium of Benton High, at
tended by a large delegation of par
ents, who enjoyed the program.
Parents’ Night wias observed
Thursday, March 13. A large at
tendance was present for the occas
ion. Hon. J. L. Anderson, the Coun
ty Agent, Jefferson, was on hand
with a talking-movie, which was en
joyed by the audience. After this
feature, games were the order of the
evening, proving very entertaining,
and every one went away well pleas
ed with having the pleasure of being
the guests of the faculty of Bento i
High for the evening.
Baptist Church Singing
Sunday evening, March 23, begin
ning at seven o’clock, you are in
vited to attend the singing at the
Baptist church, a feature that has
taken the lead in this section. Quar
tettes have been invited from Athens.
Gainesville, Commerce, and other
sections, together with trios and
leaders from various counties. You
will enjoy this singing, so why not
make arrangements to attend.

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, was
ushered in on a cold wave that sent
the mercury to a low reading of 19.
The extreme cold came on a wind
storm from the northwest which in
North Dakota reached a terrific bliz
zard and snow storm in w r hich 48
persons lost their lives.
D. T. Wilhite Awarded
$6,000 From Taxicab Cos.
Athens, Ga.—A city court jury
returned u verdict awarding D. T.
Wilhite, of Jefferson, $6,000 dam
ages for injuries allegedly sustain
ed in an accident between a car in
which he was riding and an Ever
ready Taxi Cab.
Mr. Wilhite, plaintiff in one of
four suits against the cab company
as a result of the accident, asked for
$15,000.
Immediately after the jury re
turned its verdict defense counsel
filed a motion for anew trial. The
jury was out about six hours.
Attorneys for the plaintiff claim
ed the accident occurred about four
miles out of Jefferson, on the Ath
ens highwya, when the taxi cab
was left parked in the road without
lights.
S. W. Dadisman was driving the
car in which Mr. Wilhite was riding.
Dadisman. Dr. E. L. Pirkle and C.
H. Wilkes, the latter two also occu
pants of the Dadisman car, have all
entered suits against the cab com
pany, but they will not be heard
pending the outcome of the defense
appeal.

An entertainment of rare beauty
and of great educational value will
be staged in Martin Institute audi
torium Monday, March 24th, at 2.15
and at 8.00 p. m., by Mr. and Mrs.
Gridley, artists who originated and
painted the Pageant. T. W. Lawton,
Superintendent of Public Instruction
for Seminole county, Fla., says of
the Pageant: "Nothing within recent
years has come into our schools that
was of greater educational and in
spirational value."
The stage setting is very elaborate,
consisting of 10 large original oil
paintings, each one valued at sev
eral thousand dollars. These paint
ings are complete, except for the fig
ures, and local boys and girls appro
priately costumed, will pose before
the painting completing the pictures.
As each picture is completed songs
and poems in keeping with the
theme of the painting will be sup
plied by a reader and a chorus of
high school pupils.
10c and 20c will be charged, with
proceeds being used for the benefit
of the Primary Department of the
Methodist church.

Friends in Jackson county of Mrs.
Elizabeth Elrod Turner and daugh
ter, Miss Susan Elizabeth Turner,
will learn with inexpressible sym
pathy of the death of the husband
and father, A. Q. Turner, at their
home in Atlanta Monday. Funeral
services were iheld Tuesday and in
terment was in Westview cemetery.
Mrs. Turner is the sister of L. F.
Elrod and is a native of Jackapn
county.
WALTER B. VEAZEY DIES
Gainesville, Ga.—Walter B. Veas
ey, 71, civic leader and for many
years general manager of the Gaines
ville Midland Railway, died Satur
day morning at a local hospital af
ter a long illness.
Born in Hancock county. Mr.
Vcazy was a son of the late Rev.
Thomas J. Veazy and Susan P.
Jones Veazy.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. F.
M. McWhorter, of Gainesville.
