She will also return June 10, 17, and 24. The P. T. A. mem bers and others are requested to urge those who are interested to take advantage of this free clinic. Son* Program May 31 The Ever Ready Quartette will present a program at Dry Pond school auditorium, Saturday night, May 31. Admission 10c and 16c. Proceeds will go to Dry Pond Meth odist church. Epworth League Union The Epworth League Union will meet at Dry Pond church Saturday night. Each individual League mem ber is to bring sandwiches or cookies for refreshments. Council Meets in Jefferson and Compliments Miss Bowman The Home Demonstration Council held its meeting on May 6th at the REA Building where the regular business session and program were given. The Council members enjoyed numbers given by Miss Myra Purcell, Miss Ruth Thurmond, Miss Ethel Martin, and Miss Gene Smith; also the display of handmade rugs which Mrs. J. C. Head so kindly brought for the benefit of the ladies. After the program the sixty-eight women representing various clubs in the county visited the home of Mrs. J. C. Alexander who was so gracious to invite the Council to see demon strations of her electric household equipment and her lovely floweraL It was a rare privilege for the Council ladies to have the oppor tunity of seeing the countless varie ties of flowering plants which Mrs. Alexander gave interesting remarks on as they leisurely strolled the gardens. Mrs. Robert Carr of Maysville demonstrated the use of the electric washing machine and the electric ironer. Mrs. J. C. Head and Mrs H. C. Baird, President of the Council, were hostesses and everyone enjoyed the refreshments in the garden where the Council ladies presented Miss Bowman with a lovely setting of sterling silver, including a tomato server, and extended their very best wishes on her new journey in life. month’s stay among relatives. We wish for each child a happy vacation. We are glad to report that Bob Fuller has returned home from the hospital Where he underwent an operation. He expresses much ap preciation and thanks to all who helped with the offering and helped with his work. Misses Elese Logan, Clara M. Logan and Chester Casper of Mon roe have been dismissed from the hospital. They were in a wreck last week-end. All the women of Academy and surrounding communities are invited to meet at Academy church at 2 p. m. the second Sunday in June to organize a Womans Missionary So ciety. Ben Waddell and family were vis iting relatives here Saturday. Mrs. Robert Brooks has been sick during the past week, but we are glad to say she is some better. PETHEL HAS BIRTHDAY Several relatives and friends gathered at the home of A. M. Peth el on Sunday to enjoy with him the celebration of his forty-eighth birth day. At noon the table was laden ed with delicious food which all en joyed. His guesls left wishing him many returns of the happy occasion. Rev. McNeal preached an inter esting sermon to a large audience Sunday. Several visitors were pres ent. Willie Harrison was week-end guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harrison. Rev. and Mrs. Jewell Brumbalow were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Brumbalow Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. White were week-end guests of relatives in Gainesville. He found one of his pair of young horses already dead and the other one almost dead. Mesdames Purcell and Robinson and Misses Robinson and Purcell of Jefferson were among the last week’s callers here. Quite a number from Orr’s have enjoyed, the comencement exercises at Martin Institute. Mrs. Hope Harris, accompanied by Mesdames J. A. Jarrett, Fred Thomp son antf J. L. Harris, called on Mrs. Emma ' Martin on Saturday. Mesdames L. E. Herrin, J. S. Har grove apd R. L. Eavenson and Miss es Freegian and Johnnie Lou Smith, all of Winder, were callers last week on Mrs. J. L. Harris. Mr. Fillengem of Commerce is spending some days here, chasing some of the fox which visit the hen houses here. Mrs. Joe Harris, with Jamie and Bobbie, spent Saturday afternoon with her parents. Mrs. J. A. Jarrett of Winder, who spent last week with Mrs. Fred Thompson, is guest this week of Mrs. Hope Harris. Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Harris were Sunday afternoon callers on Mr. and Mis. Webbie Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Weir were visiting out of town on Sunday. Miss Ellene and Herman Walker were Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Harris. Miss Naomi and Merritt Duncan were among the recent callers here. C. C. Vandiver was among the Sunday evening callers at Orr’s. Mesdames Fannie Freeman and Su san Brock were dinner guests on Friday of Mesdames Fredna Harris and Olevia Fairchild. School closed here on Friday with a very enjoyable ice cream festival. Walk Borders, Colored, Passes Wash Borders, colored, passed away here last Thursday. Wash was a typical Southern darkey. He had been a preacher in the colored Bap tist church for many years. He had lived out his three score years and ten, and had been in failing health for some time. He had spent most of his life here where he owned a nice home and reared a large family of children, several of whom, togeth er with his wife, Leila, are left to mourn his going away. His body was laid to rest at Jones Chapel church. Orr’s extends sympathy to the bereaved family. MRS. VINSON COMPLIMENTED AT DINNER Mrs. G. C. Vinson of Thomasville, Ga., State president of the American Legion Auxiliary, en route to Com merce, spent Tyqsday night in the ci ty, the guest of Mrs. Byrd Martin,who came home from South Carolina to be hostess to the visitors. At six p. m. at the Harrison Hotel, the lo cal auxiliary entertained at dinner in honor of Mrs. Vinson. Those present were Mrs. Vinson, Mrs. Mar tin, Mr. and Mrs. Claud Catlett, J. F. Lord At the home of Mrs. David Holli day in the Mountain View communi ty, near Maysville, on Friday, May 16, Mrs. J. E. J. Lord passed into eternity. Funeral services, conduct ed by Rev. C. W. Henderson of Roy ston and Dr. C. C. Took** of Com merce, were held Sunday afternoon at Mt. Olive Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member. The large crowd of friends and relatives attending the services, and the beautiful flowers sent by lovad ones attested the high esteem in which she was held. Her body was laid to rest in the church cemetsry, with Herman, Spurgeon and Brough ton Lord and Clarence, Foster and Morgan Wilhite acting as pall-bear ers. Mrs. Lord was the widow of the late J. E. J. Lord, one of Jackson county’s outstanding educators. She was the daughter of the late John M. and Mollie Griffeth Wilhite, pioneer citizens of this county. She was a woman of culture and refine ment and was known widely for her Christian character. Before her last illness, which covered a long period of four years, she took an interest in every activity of life that was helpful to family, friends and the community in which she resided. Surviving the deceased are seven children? Herman Lord of Birming ham, Ala., Mrs. David Holliday of Maysville, Mrs. Raymond Reynolds of Atlanta, Gladstone Lord of Com merce, Spurgeon Lord of Birming ham, Broughton Lord of Thomas ville, N. C., and Miss Lollie Lord of Commerce. Also, by eight brothers and sisters: Mrs. E. H. Nunn of Jefferson, Mrs. J. F Maddox of Ash burn, Clarence, Foster and Morgan Wilhite of Jefferson, Mrs. L. M. Cartledge of Atlanta, Mrs. Mollie Sims of Valdosta and Miss Myra Wilhite of Apple Valley. Also, by a step-mother and six half-brothers and sisters: Mrs. J. M. Wilhite, Mrs. Egbert Burns, Misses Nena and Lu cile Wilhite, all of Athens, Mrs. Guy G. Barnett of Carnesville, Ted Wil hite of Dublin and Mrs. Roy Scog gins of Athens.
