DINNER PARTY FOR
G. T. KESLER
G. T. Kesler, manager of Massey’s
Grocery, was given a dinner party
Monday evening at the Harrison
Hotel by the store employees, as a
farwell gesture before he leaves
to enter the United States Army.
Mr. Kesler is one of Jefferson’s
most popular young business men,
and his services as manager of Mas
sey’s Grocery has won for the busi
ness wide popularity. His many
friends regret that Uncle Sam re
quires his services with the armed
forces.
Mr. Kesler and his wife and two
children reside in their home on Hill
Street.
Those attending the dinner on
Monday evening were Mr. Kesler,
T. S. Wilkes, C. N. Pinson, Ernest
Kesler, H. J. Massey, Jack Kesler,
Mrs. Lucy Mae Hartley.
JORDAN-GORDON
Sgt. Charles C. Jordan, son of Mr.
ana Mis. J. A. Jordan of Com
merce, recently returned from a
stay of twenty-one months in the
South Pacific war area and on April
28 was married to Miss Mary Sue
Gordon of Route 4, Commerce. Fol
lowing a brief stay at his home, he
will report at Fort Sam Houston,
Tex., and Mrs. Jordan will remain
with her parents.

daughter, Hazel Anne, to Henry La
mar Pittard, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.
F. Pittard of Athens, which was
solemnized at the First Baptist
Church in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Pittard is with the Soil Con
servation Service and has done some
work in Jackson County. He is now
located in Waycross.

The Council meeting of the Jack
son County Home Demonstration
Club will be held Saturday after

At this meeting Miss Susan
Mathews, Extension Nutritionist,
will give a demonstration that we
feel sure will be of interest to all.

hoped that each club will be rep

has returned to camp after a few
days with home folks. He is ex
pecting to go the the Pacific in a
few weeks.

cepted a Civil Service appointment
in the Department of Labor. Wash
ington, D. C. Mrs. Johnston was a

Cpl. and Mrs. Howard Voyles have
returned to Presque Isle, Me., after
spending a 20-day furlough with
relatives here and in Jonesboro.
Mrs. Voyles is the former Miss Mar
tha Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alvin Evans.
The Boca Raton Army Air Field
I of Boca Raton, Fla., has awarded a
diploma to George R. Wilkes, son
‘ of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wilkes of
i this* city, who completed successful
ly a course in Radar Aviation Me
chanics on April 21. This young
man has manifested considerable
ability where he has been receiving
instructions for service in the mili
tary forces of our country.
BIRTHDAY DINNER
FOR R. W. ADAMS
Mrs. A. J. Holden and children of
Mr. R. W. Adams joined together in
preparing and serving for Mr.
Adams a surprise birthday luncheon
at his home in Jefferson last Sun
day. Mr. Adams is recuperating
from an operation. This is his sixty
third birthday.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs.
Arvin Holden and son, Herman, Mr.
and Mrs. Guy Howington and fam
ily, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Howington
and son, Mrs. Joe Davis and chil
dren and Miss Ethleen Nix. The oc
casion was a pleasure to Mr. Adams,
as well as everyone present.
A FARWELL PARTY
A farewell party was given by
Miss Junita Nix and Miss Carolyn
Flowers Saturday night at the home
of Mr. A. J. Nix for J. V. Adams,
who is home on a 30-day leave
from service in the Navy and will
return for duty next Wednesday
The party was attended by about 40
young people and many games were
enjoyed. Delicious refreshments
were served and everyone present
enjoyed the occasion.
Mrs. Fannie Turner continues
critically ill at her home on Martin
Street. Also, the condition of Mrs.
W. D. Holliday, who is in the hos
pital in Athens, is so serious as to
cause deep concern to her family
and friends.

Mr. Weldon Langford’s friends at
Dry Pond have been greatly con
serned over his condition. They will
be interested to Know he is greally
improved and is out among friends
again.

Jim DeLaPierrere has recently
been awarded membership in Bif
tad. Freshman Honor Society at the
University of Georgia. He is the
son of Mrs. Lois DeLaPierrere of
Hoschton, and the late Clarence De-
LaPerriere.

A large crowd attended the pa
triotic services in the First Baptist
Church last Sunday evening, in
which honor was paid the members
of this church who are in the armed
service of our country. These serv
ices were both impressive and beau
tiful.

Mrs. G. F. Forsyth of Fitzgerald
is the guest of Mrs. John W. Hardy.
Also, Lt. J. E. McElhannon and wife
are guests in the Hardy home. Lt.
McElhannon will return to Camp
Blanding the latter part of the week
and expects to be given a medical
discharge from Army service.

merce. Mrs. Craig, the former Miss
Eleanor Campbell who has been
with her mother since the death of
Dr. Campbell, is returning this week
to New York.

Seaman First Class Robert Alex
ander, who has been visiting his
wife and son, has returned to his
ship, the U. S. S. Gilliam, which is
in port in San Francisco, Calif., be
ing repaired. He has been in the
South Pacific for the last seven
| months and will return to the Pa
cific as soon as the ship is repaired.

Quantico, Va., for a period of train
ing, after spending several weeks
with Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Wilhite,

Editor Hilton of the Banks Coun
ty Journal says: “It is out of the
ordinary for twin brothers to spend
their lives together, but we have
two men near town who have done
just that. John and Polk Thompson
were born on the farm they now
live on about 50 years ago. Slept
together, played together, ate to
gether, and when big Enough,be
gan working together, and are still
at it. John married. Polk is a bach
elor. When John married and left
the old home he invited Polk to
come along, which he did. and they
are still living under the same roof. I
WSCS DISTRICT
CONFERENCE
ON THURSDAY
The fifth annual session of the
Gainesville District Conference of
the Methodist Women’s Society of
Christian Service will be held in
Gainesville Thursday, May 10, with
sessions beginning at 10:30 a. m.,
and lasting until 3 p. m., according
to Mrs. Joseph H. Cook, district
president.
The conference will be held at the
First Methodist Church, with the
pastor, Rev. L. M. Twiggs, leading
the worship services, and Superin
tendent J. Foster Young extending
greetings to the more than 100 dele
gates expected.
The conference theme will be
“Open Doors to Progress Through
Vision and Venture,” and the fea
tured speaker will be Mrs. R. R.
Paty of Atlanta,former missionary
to China, whose topic is “Women
and World Citizenship.”
Approximately sixty societies in
this district are expected to be rep
resented. with the pastors of all
district churches as special guests.
Mrs. Donald Hancock and little
daughters, Donna and Judy, arrived
in the city Sunday from Augusta
to make their home with Mi'S.
Homer Hancock until Captain Han
cock returns from overseas. Mr. and
Mrs. Nat Hancock and children will
also make their home with Mrs.
Hancock at her residence on Wash
ington Street.

Friend of. the Mitchell brothers,
Hope and Clarence B. (Ben), will be
interested to know that Ben has
been given a medical discharge from
the Army and is now working at
the Jefferson Mills. He was over
seas almost two years and was
wounded in the battle of St. Lo,
France. Hope also was wounded and
is now at Lawson Hospital, near
Atlanta.

The friends of Judge A. C. Brown,
a former citizen of Jefferson, but
for the past several years a resident
of Ft. Pierce, Fla., were pleased
with an unexpected visit he paid
this city last Monday. Since living in
the Land of Flowers, he has had
splendid success in real estate and
in politics. He served the county
for several years as its judge

C. W. Hood, Jr , prominent Com
merce peach orchard owner, has
been appointed a member of the
industry committee’ to administer
the Georgia Peach Marketing
Agreement and Order program this
season. This committee has authori
ty to regulate the size or grade of
peaches moving in interstate com
merce and to enforce other restric
tive measures subject to the ap
proval of the Secretary of Agricul
ture.
Friends of Miss Pat Dozier, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Dozier of
Jefferson, will be interested to
know that she is a member of the
West Georgia College a capella
choir, which presented its annual
spring concert on Sunday afternoon,
May 6, in the college auditorium.
Miss Dozier is a graduate of Martin
Institute of the class of 1944, and
is a freshman this year at West
Georgia College. Her friends con
gratulate her on being chosen to
sing in “a capella choir” of the col
lege.

Mrs. B. A. Thompson spent the

her brother, Mr. Wheeler Seabolt,
whose wife died and was buried in

An election for trustees for the sub-districts
is ordered to be held on Saturday, May 26,
1945, at the School Building, in each School
District in the county. The hours for the elec
tion have been set at 1 o’clock po 2 o’clock,

A beautiful and impressive serv
ice was held at 3 p. m., Sunday,
April 29, at Arcade Presbyterian
Church, when the pastor. Rev. W. H.
Benchoff, christened Lollie Ann
Huff, Shirley Gail Palma and John
Curtis Cody, dedicating them to the
Lord.
Little Miss Huff, who wore a
hand embroidered dress that was the
baby dress of her father, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Huff
of Jefferson, Shirley Gail Palma is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C.
Palma of Forest Park and John
Curtis Cody is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. T. Cody of Route 2, Jeffer
son. All three children are grand
children of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Wil
liamson of Arcade.

COMMENCEMENT

On Monday evening, May 21st,
at 8:30 o’clock, C. W. TANARUS., the gradu
ation exercises will be held in the
school auditorium. Dr. A. R. Van
Cleave, President of Piedmont Col
lege, will deliver the Baccalaureate
address. The two student speakers
are Annie Cotton, valedictorian, and
Helen Yarbrough, salutatorian.

The cool weather last week was
the fruit crop was injured. The
growth of cotton ana gardens was
disagreeable, but we do not think
somewhat retarded.
Next Sunday is regular meeting
day here. Mother’s Day will also
be observed. The young people’s
class is preparing a program appro
priate for the day.
