First Baptist Church

Concerted effort is being made by
the departments and classes of the
Sunday School to achieve aims set
for each one, and some progress is
being made. Two of the depart
ments have realizd their goals, and
.all the others are striving for the
realization of their goals. It is ex
pected that soon the entire Sunday
School will achieve and maintain
the attendance aims which have
been set.
The Sunday School meets prompt
ly at 10 A. M., with classes adapted
for all age groups, and a cordial wel
come to all The morning worship
begins at 11 o’clock, the pastor
preaching. The Training Union
convenes at 6:30 p. m., and the
evening worship follows at 7:30. A
feature of the evening service is the
informal song service.

Church, Rev. Lamar Watkins will
conduct a study of the book, "New
ness of Life,” by Estelle C. Carver.

improving from a recent illness.

of Mrs. H. A. Langford on Monday
evening, February 14th.

JUDGE RIDER CAUGHT
AFTER RACING
TWELVE MILES
Judge Rider, a native of Burts
boro, Dawson Couny, who has been
hanging around Jefferson, for some
time, is now in the county jail for
transporting whisky. He was cap
tured near Center, after a wild chase
from Commerce, a distance of about
12 miles.
The arrest was made by Sheriff
John B. Brooks and Patrolmen
David Ayers and Fred Culberson,
who chased him in a race that at
times reached 110 miles per hour,'
and ended only when his car had
a flat tire. One hundred and four
teen gallons of whiskey were taken
from the captured car.

Mrs. Mary Griffeth was Wednes
day night guest of Mr. and Mrs. Les
ter Ragan.
We’re very sorry to state that Mrs.
Earl Brown, Mr. Willie Sanders, Mr.
Arthur Marlow and Mrs. Mary Grif
feth are on the sick list. Their many
friends wish for them a speedy re
covery.
Mrs. Hugh B. Turner and children
of Jefferson, were recent visitors of
Mrs. John Scott.
Mr. Dee Marlow made a business
trip to Gainesville last Friday.

Rev. Joe Davies from Mercer Uni
versity, Macon, filled the Baptst pul
pt Sunday and was guest n the home
of Mrs. J. H. Getzen.
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. McDonald of
Watkinsville and Mr. Jamie Brasel
ton of Texas City, Texas, visted rel
atives here Sunday. Mr. Braselton
has been in Watkinsville for two
weeks where he is supervising the
construction of a home for Mr. and
Mrs. McDonald.
Mr. and Mrs. John Duke of Atlan
ta visited friends and relatives in
Pendergrass Sunday.
Miss Lillie Benson of Florence, S.
C., spent the week-end wth her
mother, Mrs. H. M. Benson.

H. F. Baird.
Mrs W. B. Banks spent last week
with Mr and Mrs. H. G. Phillips.
Mr. and Mrs. Garland Bridges of
Buford visited Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Maddox Sunday. Mrs. Maddox is
on our sick list. We hope she will
soon recover.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt McNeal of De
catur visited the former’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Teenie McNeal, last
Sunday.

ARCADE H. D. CLUB
MET FRIDAY
The Arcade Home Demonstration
Club held their regular meeting on
Friday, February 18, at the home of
Mrs. Ben Martin. Since the Exten
sion Service has withdrawn, the
Jackson County Home Demonstra
tion agent, we will try to carry on
our work in the best way possible.
Interesting demonstrations were
given on the cutting of stencils and
on working with shells.
Sixteen members were present.
After the demonstrations were over,
a pleasant social hour followed. De
lightful refreshments were served.

Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Roberts visited
the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J-
W. A. Davis, in Atlanta Sunday.
Janis McDonald's Birthday
Mrs. A. D. McDonald gave a party
in honor of her daughter, Janis,
on her birthday Saturday. Those
invited were Charles and Alice Gil
bert, Virginia Love, Shelby and
Wayne Gee, Patricia Smith, Hava
land McDonald. Mrs. McDonald was
assisted in entertaining by her
daughter, Martha, and Mrs. A. L.
McDonald.
IMPROVEMENT CLUB
OF DRY POND MEETS

The Dry Pond Improvement
Club met in the school auditorium
on Thursday, Feb. 17, 1949 with 14
members present. The meeting was
called to order by the president,
Mrs. O. N. Langford. After a devo
tional by the president and a brief
business session, we discussed a cur
tain for the stage and plans for a
lunchroom.
Mrs. J. C. Head gave a demonstra
tion on hook rugs, after which re
freshments were served ,to Mes
dames J. C Head, Lester Legg, Price
Lord, Willis Gee, F. R. Wilson, C. F.
Porter, Zee Garrison, B. B. Langford,
O. W. Langford, Aubry Highhill,
Willie Davis, T. S Ray, Bertha Gibbs
and Miss Mary Arnold.
The hostesses were Mrs. J. C.
Head, Mrs. Lester Legg and Mrs.
Price Lord.
CARD OF THANKS
As it is impossible for me to
thank each one personally for their
kindness to me during my illness,
I am taking this method of express
ing my appreciation to those who so
thoughtfully remembered me with

all of which helped to cheer the long
days in the hospital, and at the pres
ent while I am convalescing.

CONDUCT POULTRY
SCHOOL FOR COLORED
A Poultry School, conducted by
Mr. Curtis H. Collier, Extension
Poultryman, will be held March 2,
1949 at the Bryan High School, Jef
ferson. The meeting will begin at
2:30 p. m This is the first year that
Jackson County 4-H negro girls
have been enrolled in the poultry
class and we are asking all parents
and leaders from the home and
schools where these projects are lo
cated to make a special effort to at
tend this meeting. Other club
members and farm families are urg
ed to attend, also. Please be on time
and get the valuable information
on poultry raising.
