Wed On Saturday
On Saturday at the home of the
bride’s parents in Chickamauga,
Thomas T. Benton of Jefferson and
Miss Me' ia Housch of Chicka
mauga were united in marriage. The
ceremony was witnessed by only
the members of the immediate fam
ih Following the ceremony, Mr.
ar. Mrs. Fenton left for a wedding
trip. On their return they will spend
a few days at the Eenton home in
Jefferson on Martin street, before
beginning housekeeping in an apart
ment in Commerce.
The bride has made her home in
Jefferson for the past two years,
filling the office of Home Demon
stration .vgent. In her contact with
the ladies of the county in the per
fi mance of her duties she has made
many warm friends who will be
interested in the announcement of
her wedding and who will wish for
her lon„ years of happiness.
Mr. Benton is the only son of
former County School Superinten
dent T. T. Benton and Mrs. Benton.
His only sister is Mrs Alien Shi of :
Atlanta. lie was reared in Jeffer-
son, granduated from Martin Insti
tute and from the University of
Georgia and was in the service of
his count y during the greater part
of World War 11. Since leaving
school he has engaged in farming
and looking after the Benton mill in ,
Commerce. He is a young man of
many splendid qualities, has a fine
personality and many warm friends,
who are offering sincere congratula
tions.
Ladies Go To Winder
Approximately twenty women
from rix different clubs in Jackson
County and a good number from
Barrow County went to Winder last
Fiiuay to make metal flower con
tainers under the supervision of
Miss Doris Whaley, Barrow County
Home Demonsrtation Agent.
On account of a conflict with an
other meeting at the Woman’s Club
House, the meeting was held in the 1
Christian Church.
Jackson County club women'
wish to express their appreciation
to Miss Whaley and the women of
Earrow County for their generous

Wed March 31 In Menlo
Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Hood of Jeffer
i son, announce the marriage of their
daughter, Miss Janette Hood, to
: William Agnew Edwards, of Menlo.
The ceremony was performed at the
Menlo Presbyterian Church, with
Rev. S. K. Dodson officiating, on
March 31st. The bride chose for her
wedding a suit of powder blue with
navy accessories. After their wed
ding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards will
reside in Menlo.

Mrs. Edwards graduated from
Martin Institute, attended LaGrange
College and received her B.S.H. de
gree from the University of Georgia.
Since her graduation, she has been
the teacher of Home Economics in
the Menlo High School. She is the
rister of Z. S. Hood of Lafayette,
Miss Elizabeth Hood of Jackson,
Mrs. James Ash of Toccoa and Mrs.
Catherine Coker of Jefferson.
Mr. Edwards is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lester Edwards of Menlo, and
a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. P.
Agnew of Menlo and W. B. Edwards
of Sylacauga, Ala. His only brother
is Rev. Lester Edwards of Charles
ton, Miss. He graduated from Menlo
High School, attended West Georgia
College at Carrollton, and was grad
uated from the University of Geor
gia with a B.S. Degree in Pharmacy
and is now proprietor of the Ed
wards Pharmacy in Menlo.

Wed In Houston, Texas
SANFORD, N. C— Mr. and Mrs.
Homer Gay Hargrove, of Sanford,
announce the marriage of their
daughter, Sarah Catherine, to Wil
liam Arthur Viele, Jr., Lieutenant
(junior grade), Medical Corps, Unit
ed States Navy, March 19 in Hous
ton, Texas.
The ceremony was solemnized at
2 o’clock in the afternoon at the
home of Lieutenant Commander R.
A. Vaughan, the officiating chaplain.
Only relatives and close friends
attended the wedding and the re
ception which followed at the Offi
cers’ Club.
The bride was attended by Miss
Irene Schumm of Houston, Texas,
and wore for her nuptials a white
wool suit with hat, shoes and other
accessories of navy. Her flowers
were deep red American Beauty
roses.
Attending the bridegroom was
John J. Priesinger, Lt. (jg), Medical
Corps of the U. S. Navy.
Mrs. Viele finished Sanford high
school and was graduated from
Emory University School of Nurs
ing, Atlanta, Ga. She had additional
study at Bellevue hospital in New
York City. Shortly after graduation
she entered the Navy Nurses Corps
with the rank of Ensign. She has
been stationed at the U. S. Naval
Hospital in Houston, Texas, for the
past several months.
Lt. Viele is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Arthur Viele of Seattle, Washington.
He completed his undergraduate
work at the University of Washing
ton and was graduated from the
University of Oregon Medical School
at Portland. He interned at Anchor
Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota.
After April 1, Lt. and Mrs. Viele
expect to be stationed at the U. S.
Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.

Entertains Bridge Club
The Young Matrons Bridge Club
members were were guests Friday
afternoon at a delightfully planned
party given by Mrs. Ralph Elling
ton. Members present were Mrs. C.
B Boggs, Mrs. J. M. Melvin, Mrs.
Lanis Ethridge, Mrs. Nat Hancock,
Mrs. Dickson Storey, Mrs. Ellington.
The visitors were Mrs. Southworth
Bryan, Miss Mabeth Storey, Miss
Turpin.
High score was made by Mrs.
Ethridge.

Mrs. John N. Holder was hostess
last week to the following members
of the Ladies Friday Bridge Club,

Miss Elizabeth Bennett, a student
at G. S. C. W. was with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs C. L. Bennett, the past
week-end Miss Bennett’s friends
are congratulating her on making
the Dean’s List for the past two
quarters.
“Big Fisherman” To Be
Reviewed by Mrs. Escoe
At the Baptist Church at 3:30 p.
to., Tuesday, Mrs. J. D. Escoe will
review the book, The Big Fisher
man. The program is being spon
sored by the U. D. C. Chapter and
admission will be 35 cents.

To Wed This Spring
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson A. McKinney
of Bowman, announce the engage
ment of their daughter, Doris Eve
lyn, to Reverend John Raymond
Melear, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Virgil
Melear, of Newnan. The marriage
will take place in the late Spring or
early Summer.
The bride-elect attended West
Georgia College and the University
of Georgia She is now a member of
the Benton High School faculty of
Nicholson.
The Rev Melear is a graduate of
the University of Georgia and is now
serving the Center Methodist Charge
at Center, Ga.
Miss Emily Aderholt
Secretary of Class
Rome, Ga.—Emily Aderholt, of
Jefferson, today was elected presi
dent of Van Hoose Hall, dormitory
for upperclassmen, at Shorter Col
lege.
Miss Aderholt is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Hewlett Aderholt, of
Jefferson, and is a member of the
Sophomore Class at Shorter. She
represents her class on the Student
Government Association Council,
and is secretary of the Sophomore
Class.

FHA CLUB
Nicholson, Ga.—The Benton High
F. H. A. met March 24 in the voca
tional building. Miss Ann Farmer,
the president, called the meeting to
order. Minutes were read, treas
urere’s report and committee report
on Degrees of Achievement were
made.
Plans were made for all members
to attend the district meeting in
Athens on April 9. Mary Emma
Benton, a junior, was nominated for
State President and will give her
campaign speech at the district
meeting. ,
Program chairman, Hazel Pitt
man, presented the following pro
gram: Song, “Make New Friends,”;
Scripture, Annis Waddell; Prayer;
Teen-age Problems, by group; Song,
“I’m looking Over a Four Leaf
Clover.”
The refreshment committee serv
ed hot chocolate and cookies.

at the Brockton school house, Satur
day night, April 2nd.

FARM BUREAU TO
MEET AT NICHOLSON
The Benton H. S. Farm Bureau
will hold its regular monthly meet
ing Friday, April 1, at 7:45 P. M. in
the school auditorium Nicholson,
Ga. Senator Henry W. Davis of Jef
ferson, Ga. will be guest speaker and
will discuss the April 5 referendum.
Everyone should be interested in
this important election and a big
crowd is expected at this meeting.
Miss Dodd Betrothed
To Mr. Trawick
Rev. and Mrs. Hubert Dodd, of
Commerce, announce the engage
ment and approaching marriage of
their daughter, Matilda, to Fred
erick Lee Trawick, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Claude Trawick, of Macon. The
ceremony will take place at the First
Methodist Church in Commerce, on
June 15th.
The young bride-elect attended
school at Rome, Gainesville, Jones
boro, and Young Harris, graduating
from Young Harris Academy. She
is now a student at Wesleyan Con
servatory at Macon, where she is
majoring in violin.
Mr. Trawick attended the Uni
versity of Alabama and Mercer
University. He is a member of the
Phi Delta Theta fraternity and ser
ved with the Army Air Corps dur
ing World War 11. He is now em
ployed at the Citizens and South
ern Bank in Macon.

of being so sick a few days last
week.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Eckles were
able to be out riding with Mr. and
Mrs. W. D. Crawford, Sunday after
noon.
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Foote, of
Atlanta, and Mrs. Bob King and
son, Lloyd, of Murphy, N. C., were
with us awhile Sunday. Mrs. Foote
and Mrs. King are sisters of Mrs.
W. L. Barnett.
We were delighted to have a visit
from W. Ellis White of Rocky
Branch, one afternoon last week.
We always have something to talk
about.

family from our community, they

Lovely Reception Given
For Mrs. South worth Bryan
Wednesday Afternoon
On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs.
Southworth Bryan, a recent bride,
was honored at a beautiful reception
given by Mrs. J. C. Turner and Mrs.
J. M. Melvin at the Turner residence
on Lawrenceville street.
The spacious reception rooms
were decorated with arrangements
of lovely flowers. In the dining
room, the table was covered with an
eyelet embroidered linen cloth, cen
tered with a silver bowl of white
snapdragons and gladioli, flanked
by silver branched candelabra. Sil
ver trays of iced cakes with silver
compotes of mints and nuts com
pleted the appointments.
The receiving line included Mrs.
Turner; the attractive bride, Mrs.
Bryan; Mrs. J. M. Melvin and Mrs.
Morris Bryan, Jr. Greeting the
guests at the door were Mrs. H. I.
Mobley and Mrs. W. T. Bryan. As
sisting in entertaining were Mes
dames H. E. Aderholt, Homer Han
cock, Hoke Gurley, Nat Hancock,
J. T. Stovall, Ralph Ellington, Lanis
Ethridge, C. B. Boggs, T. D. Storey,
R. D. Gasaway, and Miss Ruby
