For Bridge Club

.as the setting Tuesday for a very
raciously planned luncheon, when
. ho was hostess to her bridge club.
Covers were placed for eight
guests, w.i'ch included the club
members and Misses R. J. Kelly,
Misses Sarah Dadisman and Fran
ces Smith.
Following the delicious lunch,
the guests enjoyed several rubbers
of bridge. High score was made by
Mrs. H. E. Aderholt.

Mrs. J. Glenn Eberhardt, of Plant
City, Fla., is visiting relatives and
friends in this section of Georgia.
Mrs. Eberhardt is the former Miss
Annie Maddox and is a member of
the Plant City school faculty.

Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Carter, of
Meigs, were dinner guests on Sun
day of Mrs. Lizzie Carter.
Mr. and Mrs. Y. Z. Sailors were
visitors in Atlanta, Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Golden Griffeth, of
Cordeie, are visiting in and around
Jefferson. He is a son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Griffeth and is
a brother of Mrs. W. P. Frost, Roy

W. D. Griffeth.

Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Whitfield are
visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Hubert Lyle, and Mr. and Mrs.
Whitfield. The former is in the ser
vice of his country and has been
staticned in Alaska. Mrs. Whitfield
has made her home at the closest
station to Alaska—Oak Harbor,
Wash. They are being transferred
to Jacksonville, Fla.
Weyman Wilkes is here from Oak
land, Fla., visiting relatives and
friends in Jackson County. He
brought with him fruit from his own
grove, which includes oranges,
grapefruit and Pa-Pa-Ya. The last
named is unfamiliar to most of the
citizens of Jackson County. It
somewhat resembles grapefruit. We
sincerely appreciate Weyman’s re
membrance of us with some of his
fruit which was very delicious.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy White and
son, Rodney, and Mrs. Herman
White spent the past week at Jack
sonville Beach, and other points of
interest throughout Florida.

Ralph Vandiver has just returned
from spending a week in Chicago,
111., and Omaha, Nebraska, where
he was sent by his company, Swift
and Company, to view their plants
in these cities. Mr. Vandiver is a
son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Vandiver
and resides in Augusta.

The Ladies' Friday Bridge Club
met Friday afternoon at the home
of Mrs. L. H. Isbbell on the Com
merce road and enjoyed a delight
ful party. Besides the club mem
bers, invited guests were Airs. H.
T. Hogan, Mrs. John L. Anderson
Mrs. J. L. McMullan.
High scores were made by Mrs.
J. D. Escoe and Mrs. Hogan.

Mr. Gibson the celebration of his

Sumter, S. C. were visitors the past
week-end of Mr. and Mrs. Dickson
Storey. They were accompanied
home by their son, Iredell IV, who
had been the guest of Dicky Storey.

Mr. and Mrs- J. Ralph Ellington
are in Biloxi, Miss., visiting Mrs.
Ellington’s sister. While they are
away, Mrs. Turpin of Gainesville
is visiting Mrs. Simpson and the
Ellington children.

Mrs. Walter J. Chapman of Pou
lan is the guest of Miss Genie Har
rison in Jefferson this week. She
was accompanied by her son, James,
and his baby, and by her daughter,
Mrs. James (Ouida Chapman) Burke
and baby. They returned to their
South Georgia home Sunday.

Rev. A. O. Hood has returned
from Camp Meeting services of the
Fire Baptized Holiness Church held
at Toccoa. He reports the largest at
tendance in the history of the camp
meeting and very fine messages de
livered by the preachers.

A warm welcome is extended to
Professor J. P. Maddox and family,
who are now domiciled in the West
moreland Apartment. Professor
Maddox is one of the Teachers of G-I
students in agriculture. For eight
years he was the agriculture teacher
in the Benton High School at Nich
olson.

James Hone of the Commerce
Drug Company is pinch hitting this
week at Moore and Ellington’s,
while Mr. Ellington is vacationing
at Biloxi, Miss.

Lt (j.g.) Babe W. Webb, USN,
husband of Mrs. Anne Webb of
Macon, and son of Mr. and Mrs. M.
F. Webb of Route 3, Jefferson, was
a member of the crew aboard the
destroyer USS Herbert J. Thomas
which is now on the schedule for
over haul and repairs in the United
States after spending six months in
the Mediterranean.

CUB SCOUTS WIN
OVER MONROE 17 TO 11
The Monroe Cubs will meet the
Jefferson Cubs in Jefferson, Wed
nesday, July 27 at 3 o’clock for an
other baseball game. In Monroe
last week the Jefferson ’ bays won
the ni*e ending game 17 to 11.
The Cubs were carried to Monroe
by the ball coach and assistant
scoutmaster, Jack Purcell, Paek
committeeman H. J- Dailey and
Mrs. Dailey, Mrs. Marshall Melvin
and Mrs. Bill Cutts.
The scoutmaster, Rev. Lamar
Watkins has carried the pack to the
swimming pool for the past few
weeks for the outdoor meetings.
Den Two was entertained recent
ly at a weiner roast at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Hooper. Bobby
Hooper’s cousin, Billy Bowman cf
Athens, was guest of honor. Den
father and mother, Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Cutts, Pam Cutts and Bo were
guests. The Cubs of Den Two, who
enjoyed the weiner roast were Bob
by Hooper, Billy Cutts, Danny Car
ithers, Benny Thompkins, Ronnie
Maffett, Byron Thomas, Wayne
Wages, and Theron Kesler.

thers spent several days in Craw
fordville and Union Point. Cub
Eugene and Mr. Clyde Doster were
visitors in Franklin and Highlands,
N. C. Billy Cutts visited at Warm
Springs. Dan and Don Truluck are
visiting in Moultrie. Bucky John
son has been in Flint, Michigan, the
past two months. Nat Hancock and
John Marshall Melvin return home
this week after spending a month
at Y. M. C. A. camp at Tallulah
Falls:

children, Mr. and Mrs. Hope Harris,
and Mr. and Mrs. Inus Hanson and
Jim, attended the Pittman Reunion
Sunday at Gordon’s Chapel.

son County—have shown a spirit of
generosity and service that cannot
be praised too highly.”
Funds raised here will be used to
finance cancer research; to carry
out a program of public education
which doctors say can substantially
increase the number of persons
cured of cancer, and to provide in
creased services to cancer patients.
Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Kelly and Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Booth will spend the
coming week-end at Jekyll Island.

with delicious grapes and roasting
ears of sweet corn.

Mrs. Pittman Carter and little
daughter, Rilla, are leaving this
week for Shreveport, La., to visit
her mother, Mrs. Skannal, and later
will, go to Denver, Colo., to visit her
brother.
