FIRE PREVENTION
WEEK OBSERVED
BY CUB SCOUTS
(By Reporter)
The Cubs of Den No. 2 went to
Athens last week and spent several
hours at the main fire department
building.
The boys were allowed to climb
and see for themselves the huge fire
engines. The firemen explained the
alarms and signals; showed their
sleeping, shower and recreation
quarters. The firemen do their own
cooking' and cleaning.
Among the hobbies of the fire
men were re-finishing furniture,
wood carving, and taxidermy. An
iguana, a South American lizzard,
recently prepared by one of the
firemen, was on display at the
sporting goods store.
The firemen expressed the desire
that mothers of the Cubs see that
rubbish, old papers and oiled rags
were properly stored or destroyed.

How to Avoid Accidents
While Preparing Meals
Home accidents are on the in
crease. Many of them have to do
with the everyday job of preparing
meals for the family. Most of them
result from careless practices and
work habits.
Undue hurry and fatigue are re
sponsible for many of the injuries.
Miss Gladys Ward, home manage
ment specialist. University of
Illinois college of agriculture, sug
gests that we analyze work sched
ules. Allow enough time to take
care of meal preparation and to
do It safely. Then study habits and
Irectices and work for improve
lent.
Take time to cover your hand
with a dry cloth before opening
A steaming kettle or roaster. Re
store the cover away from you to
pftrmit the steam to escape away
from your face and body. Make it
a fule to use a dry padded cloth
to lift any hot dish or utensil.
To avoid bums from deep-fat
frying, thoroughly dry the food to
be cooked. Water causes the grease
to spatter, presenting a fire haz
ard. In addition it may cause a
painful burn. Keep the handles of
all pans and pots turned toward the
back of the range.
Taka time and care in using
grinders, beaters, slicers and
other power-driven appliances. Be
sure the extension cord is of ap
proved make and in good condition.
Turn off or remove the plug before
changing the location of a fan or
beater. Check the outlet from time
to time and have repairs made
promptly.
Use a can opener—not a knife—
to open cans. When using a knife
cut away from your body.
On March 21 and September 23,
day and night are of equal duration
in every part of the world.

bined production of all classes of
livestock in Georgia has increased
