Jefferson pulls
out win in state
playoff opener
BY ALLEN LUTON
HE Jefferson football team
held off a tough Bowdon
squad to win the school’s
first state playoff game since 2003
last Friday night.
The Dragons (8-3) will next travel
to Warrenton this Friday for the sec
ond time this season. There they will
face No. 1 seeded Warren County for
a right to advance to the Class A state
quarterfinals.
Against Bowdon last Friday night,
it was Jefferson that came into the
first-round contest with the higher
seed. The No. 9 ranked Dragons, who
are seeded second out of Region 8-A,
saw a tradition-rich Bowdon squad
put up quite a fight early on in the
contest, as Jefferson squandered sev
eral opportunities to take command
of the contest. In the end though
Jefferson used a strong second half
performance to prevail 24-13.
“Out of three attempts in the red
zone, we had one touchdown,”
Jefferson head coach Bill Navas said
of his team’s first half showing. “That
gives any team you play momen
tum.”
The Dragons fell behind 7-0 prior
to the halftime break before senior
quarterback Josh Bohanan and the
JHS offense made a comeback.
Bohanan found tight end Cole
Foggins on an 8-yard touchdown
strike to bring the Dragons to within
7-6 at the 8:41 mark of the second
quarter. By the half, all that separated
the two teams was a botched extra
point attempt by the Dragons.
But, Jefferson got it going on
offense in the second half and came
up with several big plays to pull
ahead. To start the third quarter
though, Bowdon looked to be in
business after a kickoff return out to
the 47 yard line. But, the Jefferson
defense came up with a big stop to
end the threat by the Red Devils.
Not long after that, the Dragons
found paydirt, as the squad’s offen
sive line began to assert itself. After
driving out near midfield, senior full
back Tyler Hill found running room
and went the distance on a touch
down scamper that gave Jefferson its
first lead of the game, 12-7, with 9:23
to play in the third.
After a Bowdon punt, the Dragons
turned the ball over on downs and the
Red Devils were in business at their
own 41. Minutes later, the visitors
retook the lead after a 5-yard touch
down run. A blocked extra point
kept Jefferson close however, trailing
13-12 with 1:01 left in the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Dragons
take control of the game as Bowdon
began to get beat on the line of scrim
mage. Running back Zack Crosby
used a solid second effort to finish off
an 8-yard touchdown scamper that
put Jefferson back in front for good,
18-13. The play capped a time con
suming 45-yard drive by the Dragons
that helped finish off the Red Devils.
“We were able to ran the ball a
little bit better in the second half,”
Navas said. “Our defense made some

big plays. They got a stop down here
and gave us the ball in the red zone
early and then came back and played
well for us in the second half.”
Bowdon tried to rally, but a stout
JHS defense came up with a big
fourth down stop on the 48-yard line.
Soon after, Hill then found the end
zone once again on a 45-yard touch
down jaunt with 2:33 to play that
sealed the Jefferson victory.
Hill, who finished with 166 yards
rushing, said the Dragons simply
needed an attitude adjustment at the
half.
“We just went in there and we
basically told each other that we can
play better than this,” Hill said. “We
weren’t playing to our full potential
(in the first half) and so we just all
wanted to come back out and make a
statement — that we were better than
the way we were playing.”
Navas said he wasn’t surprised that
Bowdon gave his team a fight.
“This was a great situation for us
because that’s a storied tradition over
there at Bowdon and this was the first
time we’ve ever played them in the
history of our schools, I think. So, it
was a great opportunity for us to get
out here and mix it up,” the Jefferson
coach explained.” Those guys are
well coached and they’re a lot bet
ter football team than their record
indicates.”
